Nurses have a wide range of theories to help guide their practice. They use these theories to inform their research and practice, as well as to help them understand the challenges they face in providing care to patients. This article discusses how nursing theory can be applied in real-world settings and how it can help guide thinking, research and action by nurses.
Nursing Theories and nursing practice
Nursing theories are general statements that explain nursing and health care. They guide thinking, research and action. Theories are used to guide decision making. They also help nurses understand how they can use their knowledge of a theory in order to improve the quality of care they provide patients.[1]
Theory provides a framework for understanding health care problems or issues; it provides tools for understanding how people experience disease or illness; it helps us predict what might happen if we intervene with certain interventions (e.g., medications) based on past experience between similar situations; it helps us develop new approaches based on our observations when something doesn’t seem right but we don’t know why yet?
Grand nursing theories

Nursing theories are a means of communication, guidance and support for nurses. They can be used to guide thinking, research and action.

The most influential nursing theories are based on scientific evidence or theory and have been validated by research as being effective in improving patient outcomes.

Advanced practice nurses (APNs) must be able to use these theories effectively to achieve the highest level of patient outcomes.
Middle-range nursing theories
Middle-range theories are more specific than grand theories and focus on a specific aspect of nursing. The Health Belief Model (HBM) is a middle-range theory that describes how people decide to adopt healthy behaviors.
The HBM describes three components of the decision process: beliefs, attitudes and intentions. These components are dependent on each other; if you don’t believe something, you won’t want or be able to do it; if your attitude is negative or skeptical, then you’re less likely to take action; finally, if there isn’t enough motivation behind an intention or goal then it will be difficult for someone who wants change badly enough—like an individual with depression—to achieve their goals effectively over time with any kind of long-term strategy (Weinstein & Falkner).
Social support theory
Social support theory is a nursing theory that describes the relationship between patients, families and healthcare teams. The social support theory was developed by George Herbert Mead in 1929 and has been used to explain how we are influenced by others.
Mead believed that people have different levels of social support in their lives; some people have more than others. He also believed that as we grow older we change our views on what constitutes good relationships with others such as friends or family members (Elderly People’s Mental Health: A Review). As you may know, our sense of self-worth can be affected by how much attention or affection we receive from others around us which increases our happiness levels overall but also makes us more likely to seek out opportunities for happiness throughout life (Happiness Research).
Social context of health care
The social context of health care is the social, economic and political factors that influence the health care system. It includes the social and economic environment in which health care is provided; political environment, including government policy and regulation; cultural values about health; attitudes towards access to services (such as whether people should be able to choose where they receive their treatment); beliefs about how best to manage chronic disease or pain management etc.
Health promotion model
The Health Promotion Model is a comprehensive approach to improving health. It focuses on the promotion and prevention of disease, rather than just treating illness once it has manifested itself. The model incorporates theories from psychology, sociology, anthropology and health care delivery systems.
The heart of this theory lies in its holistic approach to health care; it looks at all aspects of a person’s life including physical activity levels (or lack thereof), nutrition intake through food preparation practices related to consumption habits or preparation methods used when preparing meals/snacks etc., mental wellness (or lack thereof) by way of stress management activities such as meditation or yoga classes etc., emotional support networks where family members can provide comfort during stressful times like death notifications from loved ones dying from cancer treatment which may leave you feeling overwhelmed emotionally since you’ve lost someone close too; social support networks where peers offer advice about coping strategies after losing someone close too!
Nurse practitioners work to achieve the highest level of patient outcomes.
