Violence in the Workplace
Introduction
Workplace violence can be defined as any threat or act of violence against an employee by external parties, including customers and clients. Workplace violence is a major problem in some industries, especially those that involve customer service such as restaurants and retail stores. While it may seem like this type of crime only happens at big corporations with high-profile employees, plenty of smaller businesses are affected by workplace violence as well. You may not realize how vulnerable your business is until something goes wrong: if you’ve been injured because someone attacked you in the workplace, there are steps you can take to protect yourself from this kind of situation happening again.
Workplace violence can lead to injury and death.
Violence can lead to injury, death and other serious consequences. It’s important to know that violence is not limited to the workplace. Violence can occur in all areas of your business, including:
-
Physical safety issues at work (e.g., physical assault)
-
Psychological safety issues at work (e.g., harassment)
It is a very real possibility in some professions.
It is a very real possibility in some professions. For example, firefighters and police officers have been shown to be at an increased risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of their work experiences. In addition, many security guards have been found to suffer from depression due to their job duties and responsibilities. Nurses are also at risk for PTSD since they often see traumatic events on a daily basis while caring for patients with serious medical conditions such as cancer or heart disease; counselors should also consider this issue when providing therapy services because there are many different ways these individuals can react negatively after experiencing trauma firsthand – including thoughts about suicide!
Additionally: doctors (especially those who treat children), nurses, mental health professionals (like social workers) teachers

Employees can be victims of workplace violence. They may also be perpetrators of workplace violence.
Visitors to your business may also commit acts of violence against you and your employees or customers that are not related to their job duties (for example, if there is a robbery).
Customers and clients can pose a significant threat.
Customers, clients and other people who have dealings with your business can pose a significant threat. Customers may be rude, angry and aggressive or drunk or on drugs. They may also have a history of violence in their lives that could lead to them using their weapon. Employees should be trained to deal with customers so they can continue working safely at all times.
Business owners should work to minimize the risk of workplace violence by creating a safe working environment.
Business owners should work to minimize the risk of workplace violence by creating a safe working environment. Safety should be a top priority in any business, but especially so in workplaces where employees are exposed to frequent threats and/or attacks. The following steps can help keep you and your employees safe:
-
Create an atmosphere that encourages employees to report any suspicious behavior or activity. This includes training them on how best to respond when they see something unusual at work, whether it’s someone acting out or making inappropriate comments or gestures toward others in their vicinity (e.g., touching someone inappropriately). Also make sure that everyone knows what constitutes harassment — both verbal and physical — so that they know how far they can go before crossing over into illegal territory versus just being friendly with coworkers who happen not live up their expectations (i.e., don’t touch me).
-
Make sure all managers have enough time off per year so they aren’t constantly working overtime without realizing it! This will allow them more time for family obligations like visiting sick relatives without having worry about missing deadlines because someone else wants his job instead – which could lead very quickly down slippery slope towards losing everything down there anyway since no one wants
Conclusion
Business owners should take steps to protect their employees and customers from violence in the workplace. Although it’s important for all businesses to have a safety plan in place, it is especially critical for those who have employees or visitors with special needs. Understanding how to prevent workplace violence will help minimize the risk of injury or death for everyone involved and make sure that you are doing everything possible to keep everyone safe!
