Choose one of the middle-range theories. What impact would this theory most likely have on your individual practice? Give specific examples.

NUR 502 Grand Canyon Week 7 Discussion 1

The influence of consequential ethics as an ethical framework (the greatest good for the greatest number) opposes the ethical principle of deontology (i.e., the rightness of an act itself determines what is right). Both of these impact the nursing profession. Modern social exchange theories are based on the principle of utility. Read the assumptions of social exchange theory and consider how these would affect the nurse-patient relationship, compared to how these impact the nurse within the health care environment. To what extent are all theories ethical? Is social exchange theory compatible with the values of the nursing profession?

Recommendation from the IOM Future of Nursing Report

Introduction

The Institute of Medicine released its landmark Future of Nursing report in October 2010. The report’s recommendations are designed to improve the American health system by enabling nurses to maximize their potential. In this section, we explain each recommendation and how it can help advance quality nursing care.

Recommendations from the IOM Future of Nursing Report

The report’s recommendations are designed to improve the American health system by enabling nurses to maximize their potential.

The report’s recommendations are based on a review of the literature and interviews with experts. They are intended to improve patient care, increase staff retention, reduce costs and save lives.

The Institute of Medicine released their landmark Future of Nursing report in October 2010. The report was a huge step forward for the field and has been widely recognized for its importance.

The Future of Nursing report focused on five core issues: care, health equity, workforce development, education and research. It also highlighted many specific areas where nurses need to focus their efforts to ensure that everyone has access to high-quality care regardless of socioeconomic status or geographic location.

The report’s recommendations are designed to improve the American health system by enabling nurses to maximize their potential.

The report’s recommendations are designed to improve the American health system by enabling nurses to maximize their potential. They are based on research and evidence, as well as the experiences of nurses and patients.

The recommendations are:

  • To increase public support for nursing education. This will allow for more funding for existing programs and create new ones that focus on issues such as workforce development, professional growth opportunities (such as continuing education), community engagement efforts including patient navigation systems like NurseMate or Wise Caregiver Network;

  • To establish a national strategy for improving mental health services in hospitals so that all patients receive appropriate care regardless of their ability to pay or insurance status;

  • To ensure that all Americans have access to high-quality home care services like respite care at home when they need it most—during periods when they’re not able directly supervise someone else who might be able do so instead (elderly people living alone);

In this section, we explain each recommendation and how it can help advance quality nursing care.

The IOM recommends that nurses be given the opportunity to meet the needs of patients and communities. To do this, it suggests that policymakers promote nurse leadership and enable nursing work environments that allow nurses to maximize their potential.

The IOM also recommends that healthcare organizations embrace a culture of continuous quality improvement (CQI). CQI involves implementing processes for continuous improvement in order to improve patient outcomes while reducing costs and increasing efficiency across all levels of care delivery.

Recommendation 1: Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training.

The IOM recommends that nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training. Nurses are allowed to practice as much as they want, but they should also be able to take on additional responsibilities if needed. This means that nurses may need more than one role in order to provide care for patients, which will help keep them engaged with their work environments and improve patient outcomes.

For example: A nurse who works on a research project might also act as a patient advocate during shifts at the hospital by discussing alternative treatments with other nurses or doctors who aren’t familiar with those options yet (a task previously done by social workers).

This recommendation is grounded in a number of proposals that would allow nurses to better use their knowledge and skills to benefit patient outcomes, including:

  • Improving access to care in underserved communities through greater use of nurse-managed clinics.

  • Increasing access to care and decreasing health care costs via telehealth innovations such as remote patient monitoring.

  • Expanding shared decision-making between nurse practitioners and patients by helping them develop an appropriate plan of care before they receive treatment or medication decisions.

Improving access to care in underserved communities through greater use of nurse-managed clinics.

The report calls for the creation of nurse-managed clinics that can serve as a model for how to provide high-quality care in underserved communities. Nurse-managed clinics are community health centers staffed by registered nurses who provide primary medical services, including prenatal care, first aid or wound management, and family planning services. They are often located in areas where there is little access to health care or where there is only one nurse per 1,000 residents—a situation that makes it difficult for patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes or hypertension (high blood pressure) to receive appropriate treatment.

Nurse-managed clinics would allow nurses to practice their profession at its fullest extent through training programs aimed at improving patient outcomes rather than simply increasing supply without regard for quality improvement goals over time

Increasing access to care and decreasing health care costs via telehealth innovations such as remote patient monitoring.

Telehealth is a way of delivering health care remotely. It can be used to provide care to people who live in remote areas, homebound people and those in the hospital.

The IOM report recommends that:

  • Health care providers should use telehealth technologies in their practices;

  • States should make sure that patients have access to telemedicine services; and

  • The federal government should fund research into new ways of delivering health care via telemedicine.

Expanding shared decision-making between nurse practitioners and patients.

  • Nurse practitioners should be able to make decisions about patient care, including the following:

  • Prescribing medications and other treatments. Nurses can provide accurate information on the benefits and risks associated with a particular treatment plan or prescription, plus identify any side effects that may occur if taken as prescribed.

  • Providing patient education related to lifestyle changes (e.g., eating right), self-management skills, pain management strategies and more. Nurses can also help patients understand how their health condition will affect them over time—and what they should do now so they can thrive later in life!

And many more!

In addition to the benefits of these changes, we also expect them to be:

  • Improved access to care. The increasing use of electronic health records (EHRs) will allow nurses and other clinicians to provide better information on patient status, symptoms and diagnoses. This will help improve continuity of care, reduce unnecessary hospitalizations and emergency room visits, improve patient outcomes, reduce health care costs—and even save lives!

  • Improved patient outcomes. Studies have shown that EHRs can help with communication between providers as well as reduce errors in documentation; they also allow users access data from multiple sources within a healthcare system (such as billing systems) so they don’t have to rely on paper records alone anymore—which means fewer errors! This means less time spent tracking down records after hours when someone needs information immediately…and less money being spent unnecessarily because someone didn’t collect all their required information yet either.”

Recommendation 2: Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression.

Recommendation 2: Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression.

The IOM Future of Nursing Report recommends that nurses should be able to take classes in a variety of formats, including online and in person. This recommendation is based on evidence that shows that blended learning can increase student retention rates, improve student satisfaction with the course content, and decrease attrition rates—all factors which are critical for improving quality outcomes for students.

Conclusion

We hope this blog post has helped you understand the IOM Future of Nursing report and how it can improve nursing care for our patients. We believe in empowering nurses and improving their work-life balance so that they can provide optimal care to patients. We also believe in promoting a culture of learning, which will allow nurses to grow their skills and knowledge as well as their confidence level when dealing with challenging situations on the job.
