Nursing is a vital profession and one that plays an important role in our healthcare system. In spite of this, there are other issues that can affect nurses and their work lives. Here are some trends and issues affecting nursing today:

The nursing workforce shortage

The nursing workforce shortage is a problem. It’s not a new problem, and it’s not just a problem in the United States. The global nature of this issue makes it even harder to solve, but there are steps you can take to help your hospital decrease its risk of missing out on nurses because they’re not able to find jobs in their field.

The complex nature of this issue leads me to believe that there will always be some sort of increase in demand for nurses as long as there are people who need help with their health care needs—but if we want our hospitals and clinics around the world (and beyond) to thrive economically, we must work hard at finding solutions so that more qualified individuals can join our ranks!

Workplace violence

Workplace violence is any act that occurs in the workplace, including physical assault, harassment and intimidation. It can include sexual assault, stalking and rape.

Workplace violence can affect nurses in many ways:

• The nurse may be physically injured or threatened with injury to himself or herself by another person;

• The nurse might be verbally abused or harassed by coworkers;

• A colleague may steal money or personal items from you;

• You might be denied access to a patient’s records because they are not being kept properly; and

• Your work environment may become hostile toward you due to threats made against your safety by coworkers (e.g., “We’re going to get rid of you”).

Quality and safety issues

You should be aware of quality and safety issues. They are important to ensure that you have the best possible care for your patients. Quality and safety issues can be prevented in many ways, including:

• Ensuring everyone on the team is doing their job well

• Making sure all procedures are properly explained to patients and their families before they’re done

• Using a checklist when giving medication or performing any other procedure

In addition, it’s important to make sure that any new technology used in nursing homes does not create additional risk factors for residents (such as falls).

Technology

Technology is a great tool for nurses. It can help you do your job more efficiently, better and safer.

• E-prescribing allows patients to skip the wait time at the pharmacy and have the drug delivered directly to their home or office. This is especially beneficial for elderly patients who may not be able to drive themselves or use a public transportation system without assistance.

• Remote monitoring systems allow nurses to stay connected 24/7 by monitoring vital signs remotely through video conferencing software such as Skype or Google Hangouts app on smartphones, tablets or computers; this helps them respond quickly when needed during emergencies like cardiac arrest or stroke onset (Brown & Spillane [1], p 2).
