Nursing Core Competencies
Introduction
Nursing Core Competencies are the foundation of all nursing practice. They are the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to safely and effectively manage health care for vulnerable populations. A candidate for a nursing license must demonstrate competency in these areas in order to be licensed as a nurse by their state board of nursing.
Communication
Communication is the foundation of nursing. It involves listening, speaking and writing. Communication skills are important in every aspect of your life–at work, at home and in the community. The following examples show how communication helps you succeed:
-
You can listen to others’ ideas to help them feel heard
-
You can ask questions about their needs or problems so that you can provide better care for them
-
You may be able to explain information clearly by using clear language so people understand what you’re saying
Collaboration
Collaboration is important in nursing. This can be used in a variety of ways, such as:
-
Working with patients and families to plan care ahead of time.
-
Collaborating with other professionals on an ongoing basis, such as doctors or social workers.
You should also be aware of some common types of collaboration that are useful when working with other people:
Professionalism
-
Be courteous and professional.
-
Use appropriate language and be respectful in both written and verbal communication.
-
Be honest, accurate, and thorough when completing assignments or tasks for your nursing colleagues.
Documentation
Documentation is the first step to documenting your nursing core competencies. Documentation is not just about writing down what you do and how, but also why. In fact, documentation should be a daily habit for all nurses because it provides evidence of their knowledge and skills as they go through their workday.
Documentation can be done in many different ways: writing notes on a piece of paper or computer screen; taking pictures; drawing pictures; taking videos (especially if you’re using your phone). The most important thing is that this documentation reflects what YOU actually did rather than someone else’s idea of what “the good nurse” does or doesn’t do!
Care for People with Special Needs
In this core competency, you will demonstrate your knowledge and ability to care for people with special needs. You will be able to:
-
Care for people with disabilities
-
Care for people with chronic illnesses or injuries (i.e., diabetes, heart disease)
-
Provide psychological support and assistance in managing psychosocial issues related to physical illness or injury
You may also want to consider learning about how other professionals in the field of nursing can help you as well!
Safety and Risk Management
In the workplace, risk management is a critical skill. It’s important to understand what risks are present in your job and how they can affect your ability to do your job safely and effectively.
Risks can be posed by physical hazards (e.g., exposure to dangerous chemicals), environmental conditions (e.g., exposure to extreme temperatures), equipment failures or failures of systems that support operations at a facility or organization(s). Risk assessment helps identify potential threats so that steps can be taken to mitigate them before they become problems for either yourself or others at work
Nursing Core Competencies
The core competencies are a set of attributes that all nurses should possess. The nursing core competencies can be used as a checklist when developing any type of training program or assessment tool, including the NCLEX exam.
The following list includes four core competencies for each specialty area:
-
Competence in Assessment and Diagnosis
-
Collaboration with Other Professionals
-
Leadership/Flexibility/Adaptability
-
Communication Skills
Conclusion
We hope this post has helped you understand the nursing core competencies and how they can be applied in your work.
