As a nurse leader, it is important to understand a variety of leadership models and styles. This will help you adapt to different settings and apply strategies to support and inspire others. It may also be necessary to apply models in different professional settings to satisfy certification requirements.

This assignment is composed of two parts, a graphic organizer and a written paper.

Part I: Graphic Organizer

Research five leadership models and styles. One model must be transformational leadership.

Design a graphic organizer to compare servant leadership with the other models. Consider how these models or styles bring about organizational, team, or individual change or growth. How do leaders implement each of the models and how do they fit with your personal beliefs?

Part II: Personal Model of Leadership Paper

Write a 1,000-1,250 word paper about your personal model of leadership, including the following:

  1. How may your personal model of leadership be applied in your professional setting?
  2. How does your personal model of leadership compare to the models you researched for the graphic organizer?
  3. Does your personal model follow the lines of servant leadership or transformational leadership?

Submit the graphic organizer and paper to your instructor.

Introduction

Leadership in nursing is an essential part of the healthcare field. It’s not only about being an excellent nurse, but also about influencing others to do their best work and reaching out to other nurses who you can learn from. One way to develop your leadership skills is by learning how different types of leaders operate and what works for each one.

Autocratic

You might be familiar with autocratic leadership models in your own life. If you’re someone who likes to make all the decisions and control the situation, you might find a leader who does the same thing to be extremely helpful. However, this kind of leadership is not without its drawbacks–for example, if everyone follows the lead of one person without questioning their authority or knowledge base, then there’s no room for anyone else in an organization (or society) because they won’t have any power over anything other than themselves.

This type of model also has some significant consequences when it comes down to nursing management: if a nurse doesn’t like how things are going at work and wants change but doesn’t know how exactly she should go about doing so (because she isn’t given much freedom), then she may feel very discouraged since nothing ever seems right!

Transformational

Transformational leadership style is defined by the focus on the needs of followers rather than their own. It’s a style that focuses on building relationships and trust, inspiring others to achieve, coaching them through difficult situations, and providing praise when they do well. In transformational leadership, leaders are also role models who demonstrate how to live an exemplary life–for example: “You can do anything you want to do if you work hard enough.”

Transformational leaders tend not to be dictators or taskmasters; they don’t “tell” people what they should do (as opposed to telling them how). Instead of being bosses who tell people what tasks need doing or how long those tasks need taking (which can feel like micromanaging), transformational leaders provide guidance so that others can make decisions themselves based on their own experience with similar situations in the past–or even better yet! Lead by example: show all employees why your company has been successful over time through innovation and other strategies such as providing employees with opportunities for advancement along with training opportunities so everyone has something valuable from working here besides just knowing someone else exists within our organization!

Leaders who adopt this type of leadership style often inspire others because they understand what motivates each individual member within their organization/team/community at large; however there are some downsides too…

Democratic

Democratic leadership styles focus on the development of individuals. Leaders are team players who foster a sense of belonging and encourage participation, coaching and mentoring others to develop their potential through understanding their strengths and weaknesses. Democratic leaders have an open mind about different perspectives, encourage collaboration and team work as well as give equal opportunity for everyone to contribute positively towards achieving goals.

Laissez-Faire

If you’re looking for a leadership style that is hands-off and non-confrontational, Laissez-Faire may be the way to go.

Laissez-Faire leaders are more likely to use positive reinforcement when it comes to employee performance than other styles of leadership. The problem with this approach is that it can lead to employee burnout and low morale in your workplace as well as poor performance on behalf of those who follow those rules.

Takeaway:

The takeaway from this article is that leadership is a process, not an outcome. What does it mean to take away? From what? It’s all about taking action and being intentional with your time and energy.

The best way to apply this knowledge is by asking yourself: “How can I use my strengths as a leader in nursing?”
