Leadership and collaboration strategies for use with consumers and other healthcare providers
Introduction
In this article, we will be discussing leadership strategies that can be used by healthcare providers to improve their work and relationships with consumers.
Be a facilitator
The greatest leaders are those who empower others to do their best work. They create an environment where people can learn and grow, allowing their teams to flourish in the process.
The most effective leaders know how to facilitate others’ efforts by providing guidance or oversight when necessary but also letting them make decisions on their own. They offer support so that employees feel comfortable taking risks in order for them to achieve results that benefit everyone involved including customers, shareholders and administrators alike
Be ethical in your dealings with others.
Ethical behavior is the practice of doing what you believe to be right and appropriate, even if it’s not in line with the law. A person who practices ethical behavior is someone who follows their own moral compass, values and beliefs.
There are many examples of unethical behavior in healthcare, such as:
-
Failing to report a suspected case of sexual misconduct or abuse by an employee; this can lead to legal action being taken against the organization by victims or those who have been abused.
-
Failing to report child abuse or neglect; this may result in fines from local authorities as well as loss of funding from social services agencies that support families suffering from domestic violence issues within their homes.
Be aware of your values
Your values are the things you believe in, and they help you make decisions. They’re important because they can help you to be consistent with your actions, no matter what happens. For example, if you value family time and would prefer to spend time with your children at home rather than going out for dinner every night, then when it comes time for dinner out on Saturday night (or any other special occasion), this will influence how much effort goes into planning the event.
If we all had our own personal set of core values that were unchanging over time and we all did we wouldn’t have any problems making decisions or forming friendships. However, since humans don’t live in ideal worlds where everything is perfect all the time (or even close enough), sometimes there will be things about ourselves or our lives that aren’t aligned with our ideals very well; sometimes things happen which cause us great stress or discomfort; sometimes someone’s behavior doesn’t match up exactly as expected based on how we’d like them behave toward us; etcetera etcetera…
Learn to self-reflect and be genuine
-
Know yourself and your values.
-
Know what you want to achieve.
-
Be honest with yourself about your strengths and weaknesses, but also be open to feedback from others that can help you improve in those areas.
Develop strong communication skills
It is important to communicate in a clear and concise manner, be aware of body language, volume and tone. Non-verbal signals such as facial expressions, gestures and other non-verbal cues should also be taken into account when interacting with consumers. Use humour appropriately; use effective listening skills; listen to others’ views without being defensive or argumentative.
Demonstrate leadership qualities by being an effective communicator and verbalising your ideas
Demonstrate leadership qualities by being an effective communicator and verbalising your ideas.
-
Being a good communicator is important, but being able to verbalise your ideas can make the difference between success and failure. As you detail the details of your proposal or presentation, it will be much easier for others to understand what you are trying to say if they hear it directly from you rather than having someone else summarize it for them later on.
Build trust with colleagues and consumers through your actions.
-
Be honest and reliable.
-
Be fair.
-
Don’t make promises you can’t keep.
-
Don’t be too quick to judge a person’s intentions, or the situation around them; instead, take time to look at it from their perspective before assuming that they’re trying to do something wrong or fooling you into thinking something’s true when in reality it isn’t (e.g., “He seems like he really wants me on his team,” vs “I’ve been here for months but he never invites me up there”). This will save both parties time in the long run!
Be fair, honest and reliable.
The best way to be a leader is to lead by example. If you are fair, honest and reliable, your team will follow suit. Your employees will trust you if they see that you respect them as individuals and treat them with dignity at all times.
Keep in mind:
-
Don’t take advantage of others; this includes lying or deceiving someone else because it’s easier than doing what’s right for everyone involved (i.e., honesty). It may seem like an easy way out when trying to get something done but trust me—it doesn’t work out well for anyone involved! It also makes others feel uncomfortable around us so don’t do it unless absolutely necessary!
Facilitate professional development within the team.

Facilitate professional development within the team.
-
Provide opportunities for team members to learn and grow.
-
Give feedback on performance, including how it relates to their goals, values and vision for the organization as a whole.
-
Provide opportunities for team members to attend training sessions or other educational events that will help them gain new skills or expand on existing ones (e.g., digital marketing).
Review consumer feedback or feedback from the team to see what you could do better.
-
Review consumer feedback or feedback from the team to see what you could do better.
-
Ask your staff and consumers what they like, don’t like, and how they would improve services. This will help them feel more comfortable providing feedback so that it can be used with future projects.
Leaders must have strong communication skills and be able to collaborate well with consumers.
The leader must have strong communication skills and be able to collaborate well with consumers.
Leaders must be able to communicate effectively with other healthcare providers, consumers, and/or government agencies. They must also be able to collaborate well with others on projects that will improve the care of patients or communities.
Leaders are responsible for their actions, especially when they interact with others in a professional setting or outside of work hours (e.g., social media). Leaders should follow ethical practices at all times—this includes being aware of your values and always practicing them so that you can live up to them every day!
Conclusion
Leadership and collaboration strategies for use with consumers and other healthcare providers are essential to ensure you can work more effectively in your role. As a leader, it’s your job to set an example for others by demonstrating that you care about the people around you and want them to succeed as much as yourself.
