You have previously worked with descriptive statistics. As noted previously, the most

commonly used descriptive statistics are measures of central tendency including

mean, median, and mode. In this assignment, you will watch some informative

videos to become familiar with SPSS, enter data, and then answer some basic

questions about a data set.

Introduction

The purpose of frequency tables is to provide a quick overview of how your data is distributed. This means that you can get an idea of how many people fall into each category and what happens if you add more categories. Frequency tables are very useful for getting a feel of how your data is spread, but they do have their limitations – especially when dealing with large datasets with many variables or groups. In this blogpost we’ll look at some examples of using frequencies with SPSS/Frequency software or just plain Excel!

For example, if you have 20 different pairs of shoes that all cost $100 each and then bought another pair that cost $150 each, the frequency table would show you the distribution for both types of shoes as well as their differences in price (shoes 1 vs 2) and total cost ($900 vs $950).

1. Open your data file in SPSS

3. Select Generation as the variable and click on “Statistics”. Check “Percentage” to add column % next to your frequency table

For example, if you have an age range with 10-year gaps between years (e.g., 20—30 or 30—40), then in order for this particular graph not to get cluttered up with too many lines at once, simply add another column labeled Age range (yrs). Now when we look at our data later on down below under SPSS/Frequency tables section where we’re going over how to read these tables together as part of our lesson plan discussion about frequency distributions; we’ll know exactly which years belong together because they’re all grouped together based upon their respective ages rather than just being lumped into one giant category called “all adults.”

Let’s say we have 50 people who identify as “males.” We also have 50 people who identify as “females.” This means that there are 100 total observations (50 x 2) so now let’s figure out what percent those observations represent:
