But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.

Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.

Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.

The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.

Introduction

Instrumental conditioning is the process of learning through association. The term was coined by psychologist Ivan Pavlov in his research on dogs and salivating, but it applies to humans just as well.

Ivan Pavlov

You may be familiar with Ivan Pavlov’s “Pavlov’s dogs,” which is a well-known experiment that illustrates how our brains process information. He trained his dogs to associate the sound of a bell with food. The next time he gave them food and rang the bell, the dogs would salivate in anticipation of it.

Nowadays, this association is called Pavlov’s law: If you reward an animal with something pleasant (the classical example being eating), then it will do so again even if no rewards were given after doing so previously—and vice versa! This means that when we get used to something new or exciting, our brain forms a link between those two events—and thus creates automatic responses whenever those things happen again together later on in life (such as playing video games).

Edward Thorndike

Edward Thorndike was a psychologist who studied animal behavior and is best known for his work on the law of effect, which states that if you reward an organism with something it wants, that thing will become more likely to happen again in the future.

In addition to this, he also studied learning and motivation.

BF Skinner

BF Skinner was a psychologist who studied behaviorism. He is famous for his experiments on rats and pigeons, which he conducted in his lab. Skinner is known as the father of operant conditioning, which is based on the idea that behaviors are rewarded or punished based on their consequences (in other words, what happens after a behavior).

In one famous experiment, Skinner placed food inside one side of an enclosure but did not give any rat access to it until he had learned how to turn levers inside the enclosure by pressing them with his foot. After several days (and multiple repetitions), Skinner removed all food from one side except for a small amount at random times during each day; this resulted in most rats turning around when they saw food available on both sides but only then once their brains were able to process this information correctly so they could decide whether or not they wanted anything from either side!
