Discussion: The Inclusion of Nurses in the Systems Development Life Cycle

In the media introduction to this module, it was suggested that you as a nurse have an important role in the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC). With a focus on patient care and outcomes, nurses may not always see themselves as contributors to the development of new systems. However, as you may have observed in your own experience, exclusion of nurse contributions when implementing systems can have dire consequences.

In this Discussion, you will consider the role you might play in systems development and the ramifications of not being an active participant in systems development.

To Prepare:

  • Review the steps of the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) as presented in the Resources.
  • Reflect on your own healthcare organization and consider any steps your healthcare organization goes through when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system.
  • Consider what a nurse might contribute to decisions made at each stage of the SDLC when planning for new health information technology.

By Day 3 of Week 9

Post a description of what you believe to be the consequences of a healthcare organization not involving nurses in each stage of the SDLC when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system. Provide specific examples of potential issues at each stage of the SDLC and explain how the inclusion of nurses may help address these issues. Then, explain whether you had any input in the selection and planning of new health information technology systems in your nursing practice or healthcare organization and explain potential impacts of being included or not in the decision-making process. Be specific and provide examples.

By Day 6 of Week 9

Respond to at least two of your colleagues* on two different days, by offering additional thoughts regarding the examples shared, SDLC-related issues, and ideas on how the inclusion of nurses might have impacted the example described by your colleagues. Introduction

The systems development life cycle (SDC) is a way to think of the whole process of developing a system. It includes all steps, from planning and design through implementation and operation. The phase where nurses are most likely to become involved in is the implementation phase, which occurs after design, but before deployment. In this blog post we’ll talk about how nurses can be included in the various phases of an SDLC so that they’re part of designing a solution for them—and so they can make sure their needs are met throughout the process.

The nurses’ role in the systems development life cycle (SDLC) is a critical one. They play an important role in all phases of SDLC because they provide care to people with disabilities and other vulnerable populations, which makes them ideal candidates for future innovations that could improve their lives. Because of this, it’s imperative that nurses be included throughout all phases of SDLC so that they can provide feedback about how certain changes affect them.

The System Development Life Cycle (SDLC)

The SDLC is a framework for developing, testing and implementing information systems. It provides a framework for the life cycle of an information system project. The SDLC phases include development, integration and deployment (DID), maintenance/enhancement/extension (MEE), and retirement or replacement (R).

Nurses play key roles in all these phases of the SDLC. They are involved in defining requirements; designing solutions that meet those requirements; testing those solutions during development; integrating them into one system or multiple systems; deploying those systems to users; maintaining them over time—and ultimately retiring them when they no longer serve their purpose as well as they did when first deployed

Incorporation of nurses into the various SDLC phases

  • Nurses can help in the development of system products, including standards and guidelines. They play an important role by providing input to these documents that will help ensure they are accessible and useful for staff members and patients.

  • Nurses also support the evaluation of systems during each phase of SDLC. Through their observations, they can identify opportunities for improvement or ways to make it easier for users to complete tasks within their area of expertise (e.g., nursing). This information is valuable because it helps build trust between nurses and healthcare providers who use the health care system more frequently than other professionals do; this relationship allows them access into areas where they might not have been able to go before due to lack of knowledge about how things work within this particular industry sector.”
