Select and summarize one area in the plan you selected that pertains to allied health care delivery in that state (for example, medical sonography, respiratory therapy, radiography, speech pathology, etc.). For the area you picked, what do you think the state plan does well? What could it do better, and how so?

Healthy People in Action section of the Healthy People 2020

Introduction

The Healthy People 2020 report is the nation’s official source for health data and analysis. It provides a broad view of health and well-being, describing populations, places and topics that enable us to develop strategies to improve health and prevent disease. The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) developed this section of the Healthy People 2020 report based on information from the Institute of Medicine (IOM).

Vision

The vision of the Health Library is to be the nation’s trusted source for health information and education. To achieve this goal, we will:

  • improve the nation’s health by increasing awareness of health issues, encouraging healthy behaviors and fostering collaborations among individuals, organizations and communities;

  • develop resources that are appropriate to meet evolving needs without sacrificing quality or consistency;

  • strengthen partnerships with other libraries as well as federal agencies and state governments so that they can help us meet our goals.

Mission

The mission of the Healthy People in Action section is to promote health equity and improve the health of all people in the United States.

The Healthy People 2020 objectives are designed to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in both health status and health behaviors, thus improving the overall health of all Americans. This can be achieved through a number of activities that include:

  • Tracking data on minority populations at risk for certain diseases or conditions;

  • Encouraging research on those issues;

  • Developing educational materials about diseases specific to minorities or other groups;

  • Conducting outreach programs aimed at these groups (for example, school visits).

Core Values and Guiding Principles

Core values are a set of principles that define the organization’s mission and vision. They help to determine how an organization will behave in all aspects of its life and work, including its relationships with others, products or services it provides, and how it conducts itself internally.

Guiding principles describe what should be done as opposed to what is done (or not done). They are meant to provide direction for decision-making at all levels within an organization so that everyone knows where they fit in terms of contributing towards achieving the organization’s goals; they also provide accountability for actionable outcomes within these areas. Together core values and guiding principles form a good foundation upon which healthy people can work together effectively towards their common goal: providing high quality health care services that meet community needs well beyond traditional borders while simultaneously improving health outcomes through innovative solutions focused on population health management strategies such as public health surveillance systems; targeted interventions such as immunization programs targeting at-risk populations; or emergency preparedness efforts during natural disasters like hurricanes Katrina 2005 or Sandy 2012/13 hurricane season respectively

Strategic Plan

The strategic plan is a long-term plan for the next 10 years. It should align with the vision, mission and core values of your organization.

The strategic plan should be updated regularly to reflect changes in your organization and the world around you.

POPULATIONS, PLACES AND TOPICS

The Healthy People 2020 goals are a set of national objectives that will help guide U.S. efforts to improve health and reduce preventable illness, injury, disease, and disability in all populations at every stage of life. These goals are derived from the evidence base on what works to improve health and reduce preventable illness, injury, disease, and disability in adults (aged 18-64), children (aged 0-17), adolescents (aged 12-19), pregnant women/mothers with newborn infants at least one month old or younger than 1 year old at the time of data collection; older adults 65+ years old; racial/ethnic minorities including Native Americans / Alaska Natives; people with disabilities; lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender individuals living with HIV infection who have not received care for their diagnosis or have AIDS*

Takeaway:

The takeaway is a summary of the main points in the Healthy People 2020 section, as well as key messages and actions. You should include these elements:

  • Why this topic is important

  • What it means for people living in your community or state, including demographics (such as race/ethnicity) and socioeconomic status

  • How you can help people who need it most (e.g., through education programs)

Conclusion

Healthy People 2020 is a comprehensive plan that promotes the health and well-being of Americans. It will help us make informed choices about how we can improve our nation’s health by 2020. We encourage everyone to take time to read through this material, consider what it means for you, your family and beyond!
