An understanding of health care cost, access to care, and quality of care is vital for health care professionals, as is the ability to articulate these issues.  For this assignment, students will examine the effects of cost and the issues associated with accessing quality care, both in a historical context as well as the future impact on health care. For this assignment, address the following in 750-1,000 word paper:

Identify the factors contributing to the rising cost of health care. When did rising health care costs become an issue? Why are health care costs continuing to rise?  What can be done to address this issue?

Identify the impact that cost is having on access to care. How does access to health care today compare to 10 years ago? Can providers refuse care to those with certain payment methods such as Medicaid? Do you believe that we will have universal access to health care in the future?

Discuss the issue of providing quality care. How much of a factor is cost in determining quality of care? What does the future of health care look like with regard to quality?

Introduction

Americans’ access to healthcare is a hot-button issue. But how much do you know about how Americans get their health care? Is it affordable? Does it meet patients’ needs? And what are the costs associated with this type of care? In this article, we’ll explore those questions and more—and hopefully give you some insight into why the issue matters so much in our country today.

Where Do Americans Get Healthcare?

In the United States, healthcare is provided by employers and the government. Employers provide insurance to their employees through the National Health Insurance (NHI) program. The NHI program covers most people employed by large companies, small businesses and nonprofit organizations.[19]

In addition to providing coverage for its employees’ medical needs, a company may also choose to cover dependents such as spouses or children on top of that.[20]

The federal government provides health insurance coverage through Medicare and Medicaid programs.[21] Coverage under these programs varies from state-to-state but typically includes some form of hospitalization expenses along with prescription medication costs.[22][23][24]

Can Americans Afford Healthcare?

The average premium in the United States is $1,200 per month. The average deductible is $1,300 per year. That’s just one-quarter of your income!

It’s pretty clear that Americans can’t afford healthcare right now. But why do we pay so much for it?

Does Healthcare in America Meet Patients’ Needs?

Overall, Americans are satisfied with their healthcare. According to a study published by the Commonwealth Fund in 2017, Americans believe they are getting good value for the money they spend on healthcare. This is true even though it has become more expensive since 2007 (when the Affordable Care Act was passed).

The vast majority of American adults also say that they are generally satisfied with the quality of care they receive and have confidence in their doctors and hospitals.

Conclusion

Americans are fortunate that healthcare costs in America are lower than in other countries, but we must also recognize that our system is not perfect. Our health care system offers great value for most people, but it is not sufficient to meet their needs. We need to work together on solutions so everyone can get the care they need, affordably and efficiently.
