Introduction
According to Furman and Gruenewald (2004) social justice is a critical-humanistic role for
school leaders. The critical-humanistic role is one that (a) assumes that schools are
inherently value laden, (b) engages in analyzing school structure for inequalities that
result from unequal power relationships, and (c) works to overcome these inequalities.
Write
After reading Chapters 6 and 7, complete the following:
Reflect on an educational program or school you have worked at or have
personally attended.
Describe an occurrence when race, national origin, native language, ability,
achievement, age, sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity created an issue.
Summarize the occurrence without sharing specific details.
Identify characteristics of discrimination in this occurrence.
Describe the outcome.
o Did something happen?
o Was it ignored?
Assess the reasons for the outcome.
Propose another way to address this issue.
Discuss the importance of social justice, social capital, and how both relate to
equal protection, through the lens of a school leader.
