NUR 502 Grand Canyon Week 5 Discussion 1
All nursing theories are developed in space and time, and are not value free. NUR 502 Grand Canyon Week 6 Discussion 1
Choose one of the middle-range theories. How could you use this theory to direct care in a nursing unit if you were the manager? Share your results
NUR 502 Grand Canyon Week 6 Discussion 2
Choose one of the middle-range theories. What impact would this theory most likely have on your individual practice? Give specific examples.
NUR 502 Grand Canyon Week 7 Discussion 1
The influence of consequential ethics as an ethical framework (the greatest good for the greatest number) opposes the ethical principle of deontology (i.e., the rightness of an act itself determines what is right). Both of these impact the nursing profession. Modern social exchange theories are based on the principle of utility. Read the assumptions of social exchange theory and consider how these would affect the nurse-patient relationship, compared to how these impact the nurse within the health care environment. To what extent are all theories ethical? Is social exchange theory compatible with the values of the nursing profession?

APN roles and ethical practice environment
Introduction
The advanced practice nurse (APN) is a licensed and credentialed professional who provides care to patients in collaboration with other healthcare professionals. In addition to clinical expertise, an APN must also make ethical decisions in a variety of circumstances. This article will discuss some of those situations and provide tips on how you can best handle them.
Professional responsibilities
-
Advanced practice nurses who work in hospitals, community health centers and home healthcare settings are responsible for the care of patients.
-
Advanced practice nurses take on additional responsibilities beyond those of their traditional nursing colleagues. These include:
-
Providing oversight of all aspects of patient care including medication administration, wound care and other forms of therapy;
-
Participating in research projects that focus on improving patient outcomes;
-
Serving as consultants to other nurses when needed (such as providing guidance on how best to manage a difficult case).
Advocacy
As a practitioner, you are an advocate for patients. You know that they need to be treated with respect and dignity, and you have the skills to help them get the care they deserve.
As a member of APN communities, you must also be an advocate for other members of those communities—including yourself—and their families as well. That’s why it’s important that you keep up on developments in healthcare policy so that your voice can be heard by policymakers when needed most!
Championing change and system improvement
As an advanced practice nurse, you have a unique perspective on health care. You are often the only provider in your community and can bring a unique perspective to the table when it comes to advocating for change in the system.
As a champion for change and system improvement, you will work with other nurses, physicians, administrators and staff members from across all levels of leadership within your organization to make improvements that will benefit everyone involved with patient care.
Collaboration
Collaboration is a key component of ethical practice. The advanced practice nurse’s role is to collaborate with other professionals and institutions on patient care, research and education. Collaboration can be accomplished through partnerships with other healthcare providers or organizations within the healthcare system. In addition, collaboration between nurses and physicians occurs when the two groups work together toward common goals such as improving quality outcomes for patients or developing new clinical interventions that enhance patient care delivery.
Collaboration requires sharing information among members so that everyone understands how best to serve their clients/patients/clients’ families—and this shared understanding becomes a foundation for effective communication within an organization as well as between organizations (including government agencies).
The advanced practice nurse must make ethical decisions in a variety of circumstances.
Advanced practice nurses are expected to make ethical decisions in a variety of circumstances. The ethical decision-making process involves the following steps:
-
Identify the problem at hand.
-
Decide how you will address it.
-
Consider potential outcomes and their implications for patients, families and other stakeholders involved in the situation (e.g., colleagues).
Conclusion
The APN works with the team to ensure that all patients are treated safely, effectively and compassionately. In addition, the advanced practice nurse participates in ongoing education and research, which helps educate other nurses about emerging technologies or ways of improving outcomes for patients.
