The SDLC is not just about making sure that your software does what you want it to do; it also provides guidance on identifying problems and solving them before they become big problems for your users or coworkers.

Planning

The planning stage is the most important phase of the systems development life cycle. It’s when you work with your team to ensure that your project meets its objectives and goals. The key players during this stage are nurses, who ensure that everything goes according to plan.

Nurses should be involved in planning meetings for each step in the SDLC process:

  • Establishing goals and objectives for each step of SDLC (e.g., defining customer needs)

  • Defining requirements (e.g., identifying stakeholders involved in project)

Analysis

Analysis is the process of breaking down a problem into smaller pieces. It’s divided into three stages:

  • Gathering information about the problem and defining requirements, which are statements about what you need to solve your problem.

  • Developing an initial solution, which is a plan for how to solve the problem that has been defined with respect to its scope, resources required and time frame. This may be done through brainstorming sessions with team members or by developing prototypes based on feedback from stakeholders.

Design

The design phase is where the team decides what the system will do. It’s not just about creating a solution to a problem; it’s also about making decisions about what to include and what to leave out, how to implement your design, and how much risk you want to take with respect to technical feasibility or marketability.

The design process involves three main activities: data collection and analysis (which can be done by any member of your team), brainstorming (where each member contributes ideas), and synthesis (a final review of all ideas).

Implementation

Implementation is the process of putting your plan into action. It’s where you get to see how well your SDLC is working, and where you can make changes based on feedback from users or stakeholders.

Implementation is also one of the most important parts of an SDLC because it’s where you will get the best feedback on whether or not your project was successful.

Implementation is not just about getting the product out there. It’s also about making sure that your team is happy with how it was created and giving them an opportunity to provide feedback on what they would like to see in the next version.

Evaluation

Evaluation is an ongoing process that can be used to determine the effectiveness of a system. It may also be used to determine whether a system should be modified or replaced. Evaluation can be done in a number of ways, including:

  • User needs analysis

  • System design specification (specification)

  • System development planning (planning)

  • System development testing and evaluation
