NUR 502 Grand Canyon Week 7 Discussion 1

The influence of consequential ethics as an ethical framework (the greatest good for the greatest number) opposes the ethical principle of deontology (i.e., the rightness of an act itself determines what is right). Both of these impact the nursing profession. Modern social exchange theories are based on the principle of utility. Read the assumptions of social exchange theory and consider how these would affect the nurse-patient relationship, compared to how these impact the nurse within the health care environment. To what extent are all theories ethical? Is social exchange theory compatible with the values of the nursing profession?

Comparisons between the GCU Mission and Domains/CON Mission

Introduction

I’m sure you’ve heard of the GCU Mission and Domains/CON Mission. You may even have noticed that they’re pretty similar! Now we’re going to compare and contrast these two missions in order to see how they differ and why one might work better than the other.

GCU Mission:

The GCU mission is to educate for success. The university strives to be a university of choice for students, faculty and staff. It is committed to excellence in teaching, learning, research and community service.

The GCU’s mission is clear: it seeks “to educate for success through an excellent liberal arts education at the highest level of academic quality” (GCU website). In addition to this goal statement there are several other key messages that define what this institution stands for: “Students learn how they can become global citizens while they complete their degrees.”; “Faculty members are dedicated professionals who work together as partners in developing creative solutions.”; “Students have access to diverse opportunities outside the classroom including internships or study abroad programs.”

Domains/CON Mission:

  • Domains/CON Mission: Through these efforts, we will contribute to the educational infrastructure of our state and nation by providing competent, caring nurses who are able to practice in a variety of settings.

  • GCU’s Mission: To prepare competent nurses who are able to practice in a variety of settings.

GCU Mission: The university became a for-profit educational institution in 2004.

  • GCU was founded in 1949 as Grand Canyon College.

  • In 2004, the school became a for-profit institution.

  • Now, it’s still a non-profit institution but only through an agreement with the Navajo Nation that allows it to operate on tribal lands without having to pay taxes or salaries directly to the tribe itself.

Domains/CON Mission: Through these efforts, we will contribute to the educational infrastructure of our state and nation by providing competent, caring nurses who are able to practice in a variety of settings.

The Domains/CON Mission: Through these efforts, we will contribute to the educational infrastructure of our state and nation by providing competent, caring nurses who are able to practice in a variety of settings.

How different are they?

The GCU Mission:

The university became a for-profit educational institution in 2004. Through these efforts, we will contribute to the educational infrastructure of our state and nation by providing competent, caring nurses who are able to practice in a variety of settings.

Domains/CON Mission: Through these efforts, we will contribute to the educational infrastructure of our state and nation by providing competent, caring nurses who are able to practice in a variety of settings.

Takeaway:

In this section, you learned that GCU is a for-profit school. In contrast, Domains/CON is a non-profit school.

You also learned that GCU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), which means it has been reviewed and found to be worthy of awarding degrees from its academic programs. In comparison, Domains/CON does not have an accreditation agency like HLC or ACEN; instead, it relies on the approval of its Board of Directors as well as local accreditors such as DNP Council or ACEN for approval before awarding degrees from their nursing programs

Conclusion

There are many differences between the GCU Mission and Domains/CON Mission. The GCU mission is to provide competent, caring nurses who are able to practice in a variety of settings. The Domains/CON mission is for nursing students to gain skills and knowledge that will help them fulfill their potential as future healthcare providers.
