Challenges or barriers in the Nursing Profession

Introduction

The nursing profession is one of the most rewarding and challenging jobs. It has evolved over time and has become more complex. In this article, we will discuss some challenges faced by nurses in their daily practices such as gender inequality, excessive working hours, stress and burnout etc.

1. Gender inequality

Gender inequality is a global issue that affects all people. The United Nations has created gender equality as one of its core values, and there are many countries where gender equality is not respected. In addition to this, there are many countries where women are discriminated against just because they are women. For example, if you were born in a country where men can have multiple wives while a woman cannot marry more than one husband at once (which happens in some Islamic countries), then it would be difficult for you to get married and start your own family because there will always be doubt about whether or not you’re actually pregnant with another man’s child!

In addition to these examples of discrimination against women around the world, nurses also face similar challenges when trying to advance their careers due largely due lack proper training opportunities available for them within their institutions/organizations; especially considering how many nurses hold degrees from foreign universities who speak different languages than those used within any given institution’s native tongue base language spoken by staff members working therein.”

2. Excessive working hours and workloads

Two of the most common challenges that nurses face are excessive working hours and heavy workloads. Although it may seem like a good idea to work long hours, you need to be careful not to overdo it by staying up too late or sleeping less than usual.

Nurses also have to deal with heavy workloads because they have more responsibilities than most other professions. This can make them feel stressed out at times because they’re expected to do everything from patient care all day long until midnight, then go home and take care of their families all night long as well! Unfortunately this type of stress has become commonplace in today’s society where everyone expects us—the ones who care for others—to always be available 24/7 regardless if we want our jobs done ourselves first before tending towards those duties entrusted upon us by our employers (or clients).

3. Stress and burnout

Stress, burnout and mental health are common in nursing. Stress can be caused by many factors including:

  • Pressure from patients or other caregivers

  • Working with an unqualified staff member or patient who does not understand how to care for themselves

  • Work-related conflict with other workers and managers at the facility

The best way to prevent stress is by recognizing when it’s happening, identifying what’s causing it and learning ways you can manage it effectively. Here are some tips on dealing with stress:

4. Lack of self confidence & esteem

  • Lack of self confidence & esteem

Sometimes, we are not aware that our lack of self-confidence and esteem is affecting our work, relationships and overall health. We can feel like a failure because we don’t think we deserve to be where we are in life or how successful we might be. This can lead to low self-esteem, which then causes us to make poor decisions about our careers or personal lives.

5. Poor communication skills

Poor communication skills can lead to poor patient care. Communication is the key to effective nursing, and it’s important for nurses to have good communication skills so they can effectively communicate with patients and their families.

Nurses must be able to listen as well as speak, understand what the patient wants from them, and deliver quality care in an efficient manner. Having poor communication skills means that you might miss out on important information about your patient or even end up delivering substandard care because you weren’t paying attention when talking with them about something important like their symptoms or health history.

6. Low motivation, boredom and lack of fulfillment

  • Low motivation, boredom and lack of fulfillment

  • Lack of challenge

  • Lack of interest in the profession

7. Poor leadership styles among nurse managers/supervisors

Nurse managers need to be role models for their staff. They must set the example and provide encouragement, support, and direction. Nursing leadership should also be good communicators, listeners and mentors.

8. Poor mentoring/support from nurse managers/supervisors

Mentoring and support from your nurse managers or supervisors is an important part of professional development. It’s a two way process, where you can help them develop their skills and confidence as well as gain experience in their role. Being mentored can also help you to work out how to deal with difficult situations that arise during your career, such as conflict between patients or colleagues.

9. Country’s resource allocation for compensation

The government should allocate more resources for compensation. Nurses need to be paid well, given raises and bonuses, and even incentives. In addition, they should have access to free health care so that they can focus on their work as professionals rather than having to worry about paying for basic necessities like food and shelter.

10. Nursing job satisfaction related to compensation

Nurses are underpaid and overworked.

Nursing is a fast-paced, demanding profession that requires extensive training and education, but it doesn’t offer much in the way of financial reward. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), registered nurses earn an average annual salary of $70,000—well below what other health care professionals earn for their services. For example: an optometrist makes about $93K per year; an orthodontist earns about $109K; a cardiologist earns around $195K; and a pediatrician can expect to make up to 250 times more than that!

The BLS also found that almost half (47%) of all RNs reported being underpaid compared with their colleagues who work in other occupations related to nursing roles such as physician extenders or advanced practice nurses who provide care beyond basic patient assessments such as administering medications through intravenous drips or inserting catheters into patients’ veins when needed.*

11. Poor recognition for the role of nursing in healthcare delivery systems

Nurses are the backbone of the healthcare system, providing patient care and providing a vital link between patients and their families. Nurses are responsible for patient safety and wellbeing, patient education and compliance, treatment planning, discharge planning (including medication management), home nursing services and other activities that promote optimal health outcomes.

Nurses often play an important role in preventing adverse events such as pressure ulcers or falls that can occur during recovery from surgery or illness. Nurses also provide supportive care by helping patients cope with physical limitations caused by chronic disease like diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2)

Conclusion

The nursing profession is facing a number of challenges that are causing stress and strain in the workplace. The issues above can be addressed through various initiatives that would help nurses to improve their work-life balance and feel more fulfilled at work. Referencing the findings from this report, we recommend three strategies for addressing these challenges: firstly, provide nurses with better remuneration so they can afford to buy necessities such as food, housing or education; secondly, develop training programs that will equip learners with skills required in today’s challenging healthcare environment; thirdly, build up a supportive environment within which nurses can practice their profession effectively
