Benchmark – Professional Capstone and Practicum Reflective Journal
Benchmark – Professional Capstone and Practicum Reflective Journal
Students maintained and submitted weekly reflective narratives throughout the course to explore the personal knowledge and skills gained throughout this course. This assignment combines those entries into one course-long reflective journal that integrates leadership and inquiry into current practice as it applies to the Professional Capstone and Practicum course.
This final submission should also outline what students have discovered about their professional practice, personal strengths and weaknesses that surfaced during the process, additional resources and abilities that could be introduced to a given situation to influence optimal outcomes, and, finally, how the student met the competencies aligned to this course.
The final journal should address a variable combination of the following, while incorporating your specific clinical practice experiences:
New practice approaches
Interprofessional collaboration
Health care delivery and clinical systems
Ethical considerations in health care
Practices of culturally sensitive care
Ensuring the integrity of human dignity in the care of all patients
Population health concerns
The role of technology in improving health care outcomes
Health policy
Leadership and economic models
Health disparities

Introduction
This is a reflective journal of my experiences as an RN-BSN student at WGU. It is meant to reflect my understanding of the program outcomes, provide evidence that I completed course competencies and give examples of how I successfully achieved those outcomes in my nursing practice. My motivation for completing this degree relates to personal, professional and educational factors
This portfolio is a compilation of my work throughout WGU’s R.N.-B.S.N. program.

This project will involve an in-depth analysis of the Capstone experience and its relationship to practical nursing skills. It will also include an examination of other relevant factors such as students’ experiences with academic coursework, clinical experiences, time management skills and self-efficacy. The goal is for this reflection paper to be both informative as well as useful for future students who may be considering taking on this advanced capstone class or any other advanced capstone class offered at your institution
My motivation for completing this degree relates to personal, professional and educational factors.
I began my nursing career as a nurse practitioner. Nursing was the right fit for me at that time, as it allowed me to care for patients who are underserved and underrepresented in our community. My goal was to become an excellent nurse practitioner who could provide quality care to those in need of it.
As I continued my education, however, I realized that there was more than just providing quality care; there were also leadership opportunities available within healthcare settings. In order for organizations like hospitals or clinics (or even individual practitioners) to succeed over time, they must have strong leaders—people who can guide their teams toward achieving common goals while balancing priorities appropriately throughout each day’s activities. This type of leadership requires someone who possesses both technical skills related directly towards clinical practice as well as interpersonal qualities such as compassion/empathy towards others’ needs so they can help them grow professionally and personally throughout their careers within healthcare settings
Professional capstone and practicum were two complex, challenging endeavors for me.
Professional capstone and practicum were two complex, challenging endeavors for me. They provided me with a platform to learn about my chosen profession as well as develop skills that will help me be successful in this field. However, during these experiences I encountered several problems:
-
The first was that there were no clear objectives or outcomes for each assignment; instead, each assignment was given its own purpose (e.g., “write an article”). This made it difficult to know exactly what type of work was expected from me at any given time and made it more difficult for me to set realistic expectations for myself regarding how much time I would need on any given task.
-
The second problem was due to the fact that most assignments required students’ participation throughout their duration; therefore if one member didn’t complete his or her part then others would have been left behind without knowing where they stood as well! This also meant that many people ended up losing track of how long they had been working on something due simply because everyone else started working simultaneously too!
These issues led not only towards frustration but also created confusion among all involved parties which resulted in less motivation overall especially since nobody knew whether they had failed yet!”
I’ve learned a great deal about strategic leadership and how it applies to nursing and health care setttings.
I’ve learned a great deal about strategic leadership and how it applies to nursing and health care settings. Strategic leadership requires an understanding of the organization’s goals, mission and vision as well as its current situation. It also requires a focus on both internal factors (employee satisfaction) and external factors (consumer needs).
Strategic leaders must be able to balance these two areas in order for them to achieve their organizational goals.
The highlight of my WGU experience was seeing the chairperson of my university’s board at an event soon after I graduated from the program.
The highlight of my WGU experience was seeing the chairperson of my university’s board at an event soon after I graduated from the program. He asked me how things were going, and then said he wanted to let me know that he had a few things on his mind:
-
He wanted to ensure that nursing students were getting the most out of their education.
-
He wanted to make sure that students were aware of all opportunities available for growth within their field when they finished school (internships, research projects).
Finally, he wanted us all to keep in touch because we’re always looking for ways to improve ourselves and our communities!
My professional and personal experiences have led me to complete my BSN at WGU
My professional and personal experiences have led me to complete my BSN at WGU. This year, I’ve learned a great deal about strategic leadership and how it applies to nursing and health care settings. The highlight of my WGU experience was seeing the chairperson of my university’s board at an event soon after I graduated from the program. In addition, I had the opportunity to meet other students who were interested in pursuing careers in nursing or health care management, which helped me realize that there is much more than just preparing for an exam or passing classes; being at WGU has given me confidence that I can make a difference as a leader in any field where healthcare is involved (and hopefully even beyond).
Conclusion
I am excited for what this experience has brought me and look forward to using my skills in the future.
