NUR 502 Week 5 Assignment Applying Theory to a Practice Problem: Part 1

Applying Theory to a Practice Problem: Part 1: Introduction and Problem of Practice

Details:

PURPOSE:

It is important to understand how research can help you in your everyday environment as a nurse. In this assignment, you will identify a practical problem that emerges from the evidence in the extant literature or professional practice.

DIRECTIONS:

Chose a problem that you are encountering in your practice or about which you have read in the current literature.

Write a paper (250 to 500 words) that describes a practical problem that emerges from the evidence in the extant literature or professional practice. The paper should do the following:

  1. Clearly describe the problem.
  2. Provide a rationale for the significance of this problem. The rationale must be supported by the current or seminal literature.

Prepare this assignment according to APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

You are not required to submit this assignment to Turnitin.

Applying Theory to a Practice Problem: Part 2: Application of Middle-Range Theory to Problem

Details:

PURPOSE:

It is important to understand how middle-range theory can help you in your everyday environment as a nurse. In the previous assignment, you identified a practical problem that emerged from the evidence in the extant literature or professional practice. In this assignment, you will explore and apply middle-range theory to solve the specific problem that you identified in the previous assignment.

DIRECTIONS:

Consider the problem that you described in the previous assignment and the instructor feedback about that assignment.

Write a paper (1,000 to 1,500 words) that describes how middle-range theory can be applied to the identified problem. The paper should include the following:

  1. There are no reviews for this product.

Applying Theory to a Practice Problem

Introduction

When I was in school, there were two things I wanted to do: become a pediatrician and teach. With that in mind, I decided to take an elective course called “Theory-Based Medicine.” The course was designed to introduce students to the principles of evidence-based practice as applied to medicine, nursing, psychology and other health care disciplines. We learned about theories like “the Hawthorne effect” or how we can infer how effective interventions are based on outcomes reported by patients using those same interventions (like doing research). This knowledge helped me better understand what my patients needed from me when treating them for their medical problems; it also gave me insight into why certain practices worked better than others for treating particular illnesses or conditions when compared with other approaches considered standard practice at the time (if any).

Describe the context in which you work as related to the theory.

The theory you are applying is called “Theory X”. This means that it is the most widely accepted theory in your field, and it has been proven to be true by multiple studies.

In your practice problem, you have many clients who have problems with their credit cards and they are not getting their money back on time. Your job as a financial advisor is to help these clients solve this problem so they can collect on their debt when they are due. You know from previous experience that many people have problems with their credit cards because they don’t understand how interest rates work or what happens if there isn’t enough money left at the end of each month (this would happen if someone paid off all his/her balance early).

Identify and describe the practice problem and explain why it is important to address.

  • What is the practice problem?

  • Why is it important to address?

  • Why is it worth addressing?

Identify and explain at least one theory or conceptual framework that can be applied to address the problem.

As a part of the steps to addressing the problem, you must identify and explain at least one theory or conceptual framework that can be applied to address the problem.

You should describe this theory or conceptual framework in detail, explaining how it applies to your situation and how it will help you address your situation. Examples of theories that could be used are:

Discuss how you will evaluate the effectiveness of your intervention.

In order to evaluate the effectiveness of your intervention, you’ll need to use a pre-intervention and post-intervention measurement. You should also consider using a control group as well.

The most common way to measure the effectiveness of an intervention is through quantitative data collection: specifically, surveying participants about their experience with the program and then analyzing those responses using statistical methods (e.g., mean scores). However, there are many different ways in which researchers can collect qualitative data on interventions and compare them before/after implementation—for example: interviews with participants who have completed both phases; focus groups with experts who work closely with practitioners; case studies that include multiple cases over time; ethnographies where researchers observe practitioners at work in real life situations during their daily routines (e

Synthesize your knowledge of theory and evidence-based practice to develop an intervention for your chosen practice problem that you will implement in your clinical setting.

In this section, you will:

  • Describe your intervention.

  • Evaluate it.

  • What are the next steps?

Takeaway:

The takeaway from this chapter is that an intervention should be based on theory, research and clinical experience. Theory helps us understand the problem; research informs us about what works and what doesn’t; and clinical experience guides us in implementing an intervention.

Conclusion

We hope that by following these steps, you will be able to apply evidence-based practice to your clinical practice. As we mentioned earlier, there are many resources available online and in books that can help you develop interventions for practice problems. You may also want to consult with other professionals who have experience applying theory to practice in their own settings.
