Discussion: Networking Opportunities
In this module, you begin laying the foundation for your academic and professional success. Your efforts begin with a vision that includes your own definition of success. Your vision may vary from those of your colleagues, but this does not mean you have to take these first steps alone.
Walden University and the School of Nursing (SON) also have a vision and mission, which include helping you to make your own vision a reality. Members of your new academic community, such as faculty, support teams, and fellow students, can also be helpful. Current practitioners and other member of the professional community can also help you to clarify your vision.
This Module’s Discussion asks you to consider how the Walden mission and vision as well as the SON’s mission and vision apply to your professional and academic goals. You will also begin to identify individuals and teams who can help you along the way as you begin designing the “blueprint”—your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan—that will guide you toward your own vision for academic and professional success.
To Prepare:
- Review the Walden and SON mission and vision statements, Walden’s goals and University Outcomes, and the MSN Program Learning Outcomes presented in this Module’s Learning Resources.
- Reflect on your professional and academic goals as they relate to your program/specialization.
- Consider how the information in these resources fit with your own goals and to your becoming a scholar-practitioner.
- Also consider academic and professional individuals and teams with whom you may collaborate in support of your efforts as a student at the university and as a professional within your organization and career.
By Day 3 of Week 1 – NURS 6003 Module 1: Networking for Academic and Professional Success
Post a brief introduction of yourself to your colleagues. Include an explanation as to how Walden’s vision, mission, goals, and social change initiatives relate to your professional and academic goals and to your becoming a scholar-practitioner. Also include an explanation for how the Walden MSN Program Outcomes and perspectives relate to your professional and academic goals and to your becoming a scholar-practitioner.
Then, post a draft of Part 1 of your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Template, indicating at least two academic and at least two professional individuals or teams with whom you wish to collaborate to be successful in your MSN program and as a practicing nurse along with an explanation for your selections.
By Day 6 of Week 1
Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ posts by suggesting additional individuals and/or teams with whom you wish to collaborate or by offering additional networking strategies.
Quiz: Walden’s Student Readiness Orientation
You probably have a lot of questions (and perhaps some hesitation) about the journey you are undertaking. How do I navigate the online classroom? How can I have access to a library in this environment? The Student Readiness Orientation (SRO) minicourse available on your MyWalden page provides answers to such questions and helps ensure you understand how to navigate the online classroom and utilize the many resources available to you as a student at Walden.
The Readiness Check will help you determine your prepardness for navigating the online classroom.

Assignment: Academic Success and Professional Development Plan
Part 1: Developing an Academic and Professional Network
When was the last time you read Meditation XVII of John Donne’s Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions?
Unless you are a student of seventeeth-century poetry, you may not be all that familiar with this piece. However, you may be much more familiar with one of its well-known phrases: “No man is an island…”.
As you begin your journey toward achieving your academic and professional goals, you have a great opportunity to network with academics and professionals who can help ensure you do not travel alone. This network can help to clarify your own vision for success and can help guide you now and in the future. To paraphrase Donne, no one is an island.
Begin creating an academic and professional network by identifying which academic and professional connections and resources with which you need to collaborate to succeed in your MSN program and as a practicing nurse.

Introduction
I have been thinking about what I would like to improve in my academic career. I have determined that my top 5 strengths are:
#1. Harmony
#2. Empathy
#3. Developer
#4. Positivity
I have determined that my top 5 strengths are:
You have been told by others that they admire about you. And you believe them to be true.
Your top five strengths are:
-
Your ability to communicate clearly and effectively with people at all levels of an organization, including managers and supervisors as well as colleagues throughout the company.
-
The way you manage high-pressure situations when assigned critical tasks or projects; your calm, cool attitude helps keep everyone on track in stressful situations where time is short or deadlines must be met immediately.
#1. Harmony
Harmony is the ability to work well with others. It’s about recognizing and respecting the needs of others, regardless of their background or culture. You need harmony when you are communicating with people from different cultures, backgrounds, or identities.
For example: A student may have a cultural value system that differs from yours in ways both big and small (e.g., “I’m a vegetarian because I respect animals” vs “I’m vegetarian because it’s healthier”). But how do you recognize these differences? How do you work together when they are present?
#2. Empathy
Empathy is a key skill for academic success. It can help you better understand your classmates and professors, making it easier to learn from them and benefit from their knowledge. If you’re not sure how someone feels about something, ask them! You might be surprised by what others have experienced in their lives or the way they think about certain topics.
Empathy helps students of all ages build relationships with others in class or on campus by giving them insights into how other people experience things differently than they do themselves. It’s also important because empathy allows students who might feel isolated due to differences between themselves personally and others around them (e.g., being an introvert vs extrovert) feel less alone during times when socializing isn’t possible due either physical limitations within class size limits or logistical challenges associated with getting out into public places where large groups get together regularly–such as sports games!
#3. Developer
You’re an innovator, a creator and a problem-solver. You’re always looking for new ideas, products or services to bring into the world. You have a burning desire to make things better—and you’re not afraid of taking risks in pursuit of this goal.
You might be someone who has developed an idea that could become something incredible:
-
An app that changes how we interact with our phones or computers (like Siri)
-
A new way of thinking about business models or marketing strategies (like Airbnb’s “sharing economy”)
-
A new approach to teaching students how to learn effectively so they’ll succeed in school (like Khan Academy).
#4. Positivity
Positivity is the ability to see the good in things. It’s a great tool to use in life and school. Being positive can be learned, developed, and strengthened over time through a variety of methods including: self-reflection, meditation, exercise (physical or mental), reading inspirational books/articles that help you develop your positivity muscle…
Now let’s talk about how you can start being more positive right now!
#5. Relator
The fifth step to academic success is being a good listener. A good listener is someone who can hear what the other person is saying and understand their point of view, then respond in a way that shows they are interested in learning more about their ideas or concerns. A good communicator also has the ability to connect with others on an interpersonal level—they know how to listen well, ask questions about what people are saying, keep eye contact with others throughout conversations (not just when responding), and use nonverbal communication such as facial expressions and body language appropriately. Lastly, it’s important for students who want careers as professionals in health care settings or law enforcement agencies like police departments or corrections officers that they develop skills such as building relationships while communicating effectively across cultural lines by speaking English fluently without accenting certain sounds within sentences so it sounds natural when spoken aloud by someone else outside their own culture (i.e., not sounding “ethnic”).
These 5 strengths will be useful for me to improve on and utilize for my academic career
Strengths are things you are good at, and can be used to help you achieve your goals. Your strengths can also help you overcome challenges in the future. Here are 5 strengths that will be useful for me to improve on and utilize for my academic career:
-
I am a hard worker who strives to make sure that everything is done on time, even if it means staying late at night or coming in early on weekends. This has helped me get ahead academically because I know how important it is to have all due dates marked down beforehand so that there’s no confusion later on when assignments need grading or exams need marking up by instructors.
-
I’m very organized; this helps me stay organized throughout each semester as well as keep track of requirements for courses taken outside of school (such as work experience). It also helps me stay focused when working towards completing tasks like writing papers/reports which require focus over long periods of time (like writing long essays).
Conclusion
This plan is a great way to start off your academic career. It will serve as an excellent foundation for your future success in academics and professional development.
