We have learned in our readings this week that modifiers may be used in conjunction with HCPCS codes and that there are several modifiers and situations when this may be needed. Modifiers provide additional information to the insurance company related to a product or service that is being reported for reimbursement purposes. Modifiers are an additional descriptor that notifies the insurance that there was a specific circumstance that arose outside of the normal process during the patient’s encounter.
