Discussion Prompt – Week 4: Linking Policy and Sector-Specific Risk

This week you will explore how homeland security law and infrastructure protection strategy intersect. You will draw from your assigned news article, Chapters 7 and 8 of the textbook, and the sector-specific pages from CISA’s official website.

Your task is to write a post (500–700 words) in which you do the following:

Briefly summarize your news article, including what happened and which system, facility, or infrastructure was affected.

Identify one or more laws or legislative actions from Chapter 7 that relate to the type of risk described in your article. Explain how those laws were intended to address the kind of threat, vulnerability, or consequence shown in your news story.

Visit the CISA page on critical infrastructure sectors (https://www.cisa.gov/topics/critical-infrastructure-security-and-resilience/critical-infrastructure-sectorsLinks to an external site.).

Determine which sector your article best fits into. Note: many incidents will fit into multiple CI sectors; choose the one that, in your opinion, provides the best fit.

Click on that sector and read the full overview provided by CISA. Follow the links that are provided to learn more about that sector, keeping your news article in mind as you read.

In your post, explain how CISA defines and approaches protection of that sector.

Then assess: Based on what happened in your article, do you think this sector’s current approach to security and resilience is sufficient? Why or why not?
