Prepare two posts each addressing one of the three following questions. Posts should be limited to 500 words (+/- 10%). Ensure all references are cited. Use at least two additional authoritative sources (government, research, etc.) in addition to the course texts and additional resources provided in the Week 3 Resources section.
1) Disaster can strike anytime, anywhere. It takes many forms – hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, fires, hazardous spills, pandemics, or acts of terrorism. An incident can build over days or weeks, or hit suddenly, without warning. A poorly managed incident response can undermine our safety and well-being. With so much at stake, we must effectively manage our response efforts. Although most incidents are handled locally, partnerships among federal, state, local and tribal agencies, as well as non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and private sector organizations may be required. What are some common causes of disaster response problems? What advantage does the Incident Command System (ICS) bring?
2) What are the key tenets and concepts of the National Incident Management System (NIMS)? What is the purpose and function of ICS? How do the two relate? Why is it important for federal, state, local and tribal emergency managers and first responders to train and participate in this structure? What is the role of the private sector in relation to the NIMS/ICS structure and process?
3) What is a Common Operating Picture (COP)? Why is it important in disaster response?
After posting your responses, review your classmates’ responses. Choose one classmate’s post and add to their discussion. Your response should be no more than 250 words (+/-10%) based on academic references (cite your references).
