Objective: To evaluate DNP students’ ability to interpret and apply biostatistical concepts in the analysis of nursing and healthcare research articles.
Instructions:
1. Select a peer-reviewed nursing or healthcare research article published within the last 5 years, including statistical analysis (e.g., t-test, ANOVA, chi-square, regression).
2. Write a 3–5 page critical appraisal (APA 7th format, double-spaced) that includes the following sections:
A. Article Overview
· Title, authors, journal, year
· Purpose of the study and research question/hypothesis
B. Statistical Analysis
· Identify the type(s) of statistical tests used.
· Explain why the selected tests were appropriate or not for the study design and data type.
· Describe the variables (independent, dependent, confounders if applicable).
C. Interpretation of Results
· Discuss the statistical significance (p-values, confidence intervals).
· Evaluate effect sizes or other relevant measures of clinical importance.
· Interpret the results in your own words.
D. Application to Practice
· Explain how the findings can or cannot be applied to advanced nursing practice.
· Reflect on the importance of statistical literacy for DNP-prepared nurses in translating research into practice.
