Discussion: Effective Team Characteristics

As the saying goes, “There is no I in team.” There is another saying, “The whole world is a team.” These two sayings support the fact that everyone in healthcare organizations must work together for the good of patients. There is much in healthcare literature focusing on the role of high-performance teams and their impact on patient quality, patient safety, and healthcare worker satisfaction. One of the greatest “value-added” benefits of high-performance teams is the collaboration and sharing of essential information to enhance quality and patient outcomes. In modern healthcare organizations, effective teams are critical to providing patient and healthcare worker satisfaction. Using the readings for the week, the South University Online Library, and the Internet, respond to the following: Describe at least three characteristics of an effective team. Identify two challenges with interprofessional healthcare teams with respect to the various roles. Describe one high-performing team in which you are currently engaged or have engaged in the past. What are the reasons for the success or failure of this team? Examine how education models created for interprofessional healthcare students may develop high-performing healthcare teams. Comment on the postings of at least two peers.

Introduction

Teamwork is an essential part of any organization. An effective team has a positive attitude; they set clear objectives, communicate well with one another, are respectful and supportive.

Mutual respect

Mutual respect is a foundation of a good team. It’s important to respect the opinions of others in the team, as well as their roles in the organization and their levels of experience. When you have mutual respect on your team, you can make decisions together without being afraid that someone will disagree with you or try to take over execution responsibilities.

In order for mutual respect to be effective, everyone must understand what it means for them personally and how they fit into this larger picture and they need sufficient latitude to express their differing perspectives without fear of repercussions from others on board (or those who aren’t).

Positive attitude

A positive attitude is a key ingredient in team success. It can help you overcome obstacles, build strong relationships and improve your work performance. A positive attitude can also help you stay motivated as you strive to reach your goals.

Shared goals

Effective teams are able to communicate their goals and work together toward achieving them. Each member of the team should be able to articulate what they want out of the project, how they will accomplish this, and how they will measure their success.

This communication may not happen immediately or even at all—but it’s important that everyone on your team know what everyone else is doing and why those actions are important for reaching your goal.

Communicate well with one another

To be effective, a team must communicate well with one another. This can be done through verbal and non-verbal communication, face-to-face, in person or online. Technology is also a way for teams to communicate effectively with each other.

The importance of listening skills cannot be overstated; if you don’t hear what someone says then all the other things they say will fall on deaf ears! Likewise speaking skills are just as important because people need to understand what you’re trying to say before they can give feedback or ideas on how to improve their products or services.

Set clear objectives and deadlines

  • Set clear objectives and deadlines.

  • Set goals for the team. For example, “Our goal is to improve our product launch process by 10% by the end of June” or “We want to hire an account manager who will be able to handle all our clients’ needs within one year.”

Take responsibility for one’s own work and actively support others in the team.

As a team, you should take responsibility for your own work and actively support others in the team.

  • Give credit where credit is due. It’s important to give other members of your team the recognition they deserve, whether it be praise or criticism. You can also encourage them by asking questions that make them think about how their actions impact the overall outcome of their projects or tasks. This will help keep everyone focused on meeting deadlines and staying on task throughout each day’s work session (or week).

  • Don’t be afraid to delegate tasks if necessary! Delegating responsibilities allows people with different skill sets access to more information than one person could try to handle alone—and it helps prevent burnout among team members as well because they’re not always expected/expected.

  • Team members should be motivated to achieve their goals.

  • The leader should clearly define the purpose of the project so that everyone knows what they’re working on and why it matters to them.

  • Communication is important in any group setting because it helps people understand each other’s points of view better than if they didn’t talk at all (or only used email). If you speak English but have an accent or don’t know how to use proper grammar, nobody will understand what you’re saying! That’s why learning some basic skills like speaking clearly is important for any team member who wants their ideas heard by others on their team—especially those who may not know much about technology yet.”

Conclusion

The team members in an effective team are all committed to the success of the project and each other. They share a common goal, and everyone takes responsibility for their own work. They also communicate well with one another, which helps them achieve their goals more quickly than if they don’t have this type of relationship.
