What comparisons can be found between the GCU Mission and Domains/CON Mission and Program Competencies
Introduction
The GCU Mission and Domains/CON Mission and Program Competencies are similar in that they both describe the university’s vision. Both have a clear purpose and are based on the mission statement. The first difference between these two missions is that the GCU one is more broad than the other because it encompasses all aspects of life at GCU, whereas CON only details the student experience.
Section: A second difference between these two missions is that while they share some characteristics, they also differ in other areas too. In particular, which programs or courses students should take might be different depending on what kind of institution you’re attending (e.g., liberal arts versus research institutions). This can lead to confusion as well as unnecessary waste of resources if students aren’t able to follow through with their education due to differences between institutions’ mission statements or program requirements; therefore, colleges should adopt consistent policies across all programs.”
Both the mission statements share similarities, as do the academic domains.
Both the mission statements share similarities, as do the academic domains. Both serve people and communities through service, scholarship and faith-based initiatives. The GCU’s domain of faith and inclusion has been expanded to include social justice issues as well.
The focus on service is evident in both programs’ missions statements: “To engage students so that they become servant leaders for Christ,” (GCU) and “The mission of this institution is to provide educational programs that prepare students for lives of leadership within their community,” (CON).

-
Service to People: This is an inclusive campus where students can grow in their faith as well as experience diverse cultures through education. Students are encouraged to engage with the campus community through volunteer opportunities; participate in social justice initiatives such as Habitat for Humanity; tutor younger students at school or family members during break times; attend different religious events throughout the year (e.g., Christmas Eve service); pray regularly at chapel services (which happen every day), etc…
-
Scholarship: In addition to providing educational opportunities for students who may have missed out on formal schooling because of economic hardship or other factors such as culture shock moving from one country into another one where English/Spanish isn’t spoken by everyone around them anymore due
Many of the CON Program Competencies are aligned with the GCU academic domains and vice versa.

There are some CON Program Competencies that align with more than one of GCUs academic domains.
There are some CON Program Competencies that align with more than one of GCUs academic domains. For example, the CON Program Competency on Communication and Leadership is aligned with both the Business (C) and Communication (I) academic domains. Similarly, the CON Program Competency on Planning and Implementation is aligned with both the Business (C), Education (E), Health Sciences (H), Law Enforcement & Security Studies & Administration (LESSA) and Management & Economics Academic Domains. The CON Program Competency on Research & Analysis does not have any specific alignment but it does fall under other Academic Domains such as Business Administration or Psychology.

Con tracks closely to the “Service” domain of GCU’s Academic Core, which includes:
-
Service learning in all departments and programs of study; service learning opportunities related to each student’s personal interests or skills; participation in co-curricular activities that promote service learning; curriculum development strategies that incorporate service learning into coursework and instruction at the undergraduate level (including pre-professional programs)
Conclusion
The CON Mission statement and Program Competencies align with the GCU Mission statement and academic domains. This is important because it shows how well our two institutions are aligned in their values, goals, and practices. It also shows that students at GCU feel supported by Converse College while they are here on campus as well as after graduation when they go out into the world.
