Choose a chronic health issue individuals experience (e.g. diabetes, fibromyalgia, asthma, addiction) that is often seen by health psychologists. MY CHOICE PARKINSON’S DISEASE.

Write a 1,250-1,500-word essay that addresses the following:

  1. a) What problems are often experienced by individuals and their families as a result of this illness (e.g. anxiety, depression, stigma, stress, non-adherence)?
  2. b) How can psychological theory be applied to describe the source of the problem and to treat the issue for the individual?
  3. i) You may choose the psychological theory/theories you wish to apply (e.g. stress theories, adherence theories, health promotion theories, and social norms theories, as long as they are discussed in the literature).
  4. c) What issues are discussed in the literature regarding this health issue? What research is currently being examined on the topic?
  5. d) How can health psychology/health psychologists aid individuals, families, and/or communities in coping with the illness?

Utilize a minimum of six outside scholarly sources (peer-reviewed journal articles obtained from the GCU library). Certain websites (e.g. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, American Psychological Association) may be used in addition to the six peer-reviewed journal articles.

Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Research literature in Health Psychology

Introduction

The field of health psychology is one that has grown rapidly in recent years. It has become a key component in the treatment of many illnesses, and it also offers a valuable perspective on the relationship between mental health and physical health. As a result, there has been an explosion of research studies conducted on this topic by experts from various disciplines across the world. In this article, we will outline some of those studies so you can get an overview as well!

Behavioral medicine

Behavioral medicine is a relatively new field of medicine that focuses on the role of behavior in health and disease. This field is also referred to as behavioral science, behavioral health care and behavioral health sciences.

Behavioral Medicine brings together the fields of psychology, psychiatry, anthropology and sociology to study how people interact with their environment in order to promote good mental health. The goal of this type of treatment is not only helping patients recover from an illness but also preventing them from developing future illnesses by preventing undesirable behaviors such as smoking cigarettes or eating unhealthy foods.

Chronic disease

Chronic disease is a broad term that covers a wide range of health problems. These include:

  • Diabetes

  • Heart disease

  • High blood pressure

Clinical health psychology

Clinical health psychology is the application of psychological theory, research and methods to health-related issues and problems. The first step in clinical health psychology is typically an assessment by a professional who can provide information about your current mental state. This helps determine what kind of treatment will be most appropriate for you.

The next step is usually an evaluation by a psychologist or psychiatrist who specializes in diagnosing mental disorders based on observation alone (this type of evaluation usually lasts 2-3 hours). The purpose behind this evaluation process is to determine whether there are any underlying issues that need further treatment before making any decisions about medication usage or other forms of therapy like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

Communication and Health

In the Health Psychology literature, communication is a key factor in health. Communication between patients and health professionals is an important part of this relationship. The ability to communicate effectively with your doctor or nurse can help them understand your needs and make better decisions about how they should treat you.

Communication between other members of the healthcare team (such as nurses) can also be very helpful when it comes to improving patient outcomes by ensuring that all staff members have an understanding of each patient’s condition or situation so that no one gets left out of important conversations about their care plan (or lack thereof).

In addition to helping people understand what’s happening within their bodies at any given time—and why—talking openly about these things with others outside one’s immediate circle could prove invaluable later down long road towards recovery from illness; after all talking helps us process information more efficiently which leads us down path towards resolution faster!

Consumer health communication

In the consumer health communication field, researchers use a multidisciplinary approach to explore how people make decisions about their health. They study how consumers interpret information they receive and how they apply it in their daily lives. This research can help us better understand why people choose some products over others and what factors influence their choices.

The field of consumer health communication has grown over the past decade as more Americans turn to social media for information about their own or family’s health issues. As this trend continues, it becomes increasingly important for researchers within this field to develop new ways of communicating with consumers about their own experiences with illness or injury through digital channels such as Facebook Messenger Chat Bots

Controlled trial

A controlled trial is a scientific experiment designed to test the safety and/or effectiveness of a new treatment. The design of a clinical trial can be further divided into four types:

  • Double blind, placebo-controlled

  • Randomized cross over (translation: patients receive different treatments at various times in their lives)

  • Single blind or sham control

In addition to these four main types, there are also some other variations on these designs such as “open label” and “single arm studies” which do not use double blinding or randomization in their design but still form part of this category because they involve treating patients with an intervention (the drug being tested)

Coronary heart disease

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a condition in which the coronary arteries become narrowed, usually by atherosclerosis, and limit the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart. The main symptom of CHD is chest pain that may be felt on exertion or when resting. Other symptoms include shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and pain in your jaw while eating or chewing food.[1]

Coronary artery disease (CAD) refers to conditions where there are changes in the inner lining of your arteries that can cause blockages that limit flow through them.[2] According to a study published by Journal Of Family Practice,[3] CAD is more common than previously thought as it affects nearly one out every three adults over 40 years old.[4]

Cross-sectional study

Cross-sectional studies are often used to assess prevalence, patterns and trends of health and disease. They can also be used to look at risk factors, protective factors, correlates and consequences of health behaviors. A cross sectional study involves observing a group of individuals at one point in time (usually on a specific day) then comparing them with another group at another time (usually on another day). The researchers will typically collect demographic information such as gender identity or age along with other variables such as socioeconomic status or ethnicity which may be useful in understanding how these groups differ from each other in terms of their level of risk for developing certain diseases over time

Effectiveness research

The effectiveness of health interventions is a key component of evidence-based practice. Effectiveness research can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of health interventions, measure their impact on individuals, groups or communities, and inform decision-making about how best to use resources for people’s health needs.

It is often used as an assessment tool for evaluating the impact of different types of interventions on patients’ outcomes such as pain relief after surgery or improved sleep quality in adults with insomnia compared with placebo tablets (a dummy pill).

Exercise testing

Exercise testing is used to diagnose exercise capacity in patients, monitor the effectiveness of treatment for physical disorders, assess risk for heart disease and stroke. The test measures your ability to carry out activities that require a person’s muscles and cardiovascular system to work together. This test can also be used as an initial screening tool before starting an exercise program or considering surgery.

Takeaway:

The takeaway is the most important part of any article. It should be a summary of the main points, supported by evidence from research literature. The takeaway should be clear and concise (and not too long).

Conclusion

While the field of health psychology has come a long way in recent years, there is still much more to do. It is important that researchers continue their efforts to address issues such as chronic disease, behavioral medicine, and consumer health communication. We hope that this article has given you some insight into how these areas intersect with other fields like medicine and psychology so that you can begin developing your own research project!
