Where can you find evidence to inform your thoughts and scholarly writing? Throughout your degree program, you will use research literature to explore ideas, guide your thinking, and gain new insights. As you search the research literature, it is important to use resources that are peer-reviewed and from scholarly journals. You may already have some favorite online resources and databases that you use or have found useful in the past. For this Discussion, you explore databases available through the Walden Library.

Review the information presented in the Resources for using the Walden Library, searching the databases, and evaluating online resources.
Begin searching for a peer-reviewed article that pertains to your practice area and is of particular interest to you.
By Day 3

Using proper APA formatting, cite the peer-reviewed article you selected that pertains to your practice area and is of particular interest to you and identify the database that you used to search for the article. Explain any difficulties you experienced while searching for this article. Would this database be useful to your colleagues? Explain why or why not. Would you recommend this database? Explain why or why not… Support main post with 3 of more current, credible sources and cite source within content of posting and on a reference list in proper APA.

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.

Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.

Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.

The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.

Finding Scholarly Articles

To find scholarly articles, you can use the search box on the Walden Library home page. You can also use a database such as ProQuest or Credo Reference to find articles.

When you find an article that interests you, read it carefully. Ask yourself what makes this article credible and reliable. Look for signs that the author has done research and knows what he or she is talking about. Also look for signs of bias in the article—for example, does the author seem to have a particular point of view?

Articles in Full-Text Journals (Walden Library Home Page)

To search for articles in full-text journals, follow the steps below:

  • Go to the Walden Library homepage and click on “Full-Text Journals” under “Resources.”

  • Select a journal title from the drop-down menu.

  • Click on “Citation Manager.”

  • Search for keywords or phrases related to your research topic (e.g., “global warming”). Press enter when finished entering your search term(s). Press Ctrl+f if you wish to filter results based on author name, year of publication or other criteria that might help narrow down what types of information you’re looking for!

Dissertations and Theses in the Walden Library

You can search for dissertations and theses in the Walden Library by subject, keyword, author or title.

Formatting Citations (CiteItRightOnline)

CiteItRightOnline is a free citation management software that helps you format your citations and bibliographies. It’s available for both Mac and Windows, and it’s easy to use. Simply enter the title of a piece of work into the search field at the top of the page, then click on “Citations.” A list will appear with all of your references listed in alphabetical order by author or by reference type (i.e., journal article).

To cite multiple sources: Select all citations that apply to each source individually before clicking “Create Citation” next to each citation’s name; this will create separate entries in your bibliography entry with hyperlinks back to individual articles/works cited pages within each source listed above rather than simply linking one single PDF file across multiple pages like traditional citations do which means even if someone else has already cited another source in their own paper then they would still need access only once instead having everything duplicated across multiple documents!

Finding Reference Materials Using the Credo Online Reference Service

The Credo Reference Service is the online reference service of the Walden Library. Credo has a searchable database of encyclopedias, dictionaries, and other reference materials. In addition to its own search engine called Summon, you can access Credo from anywhere on campus by logging into your GoDux account or visiting http://go-dux.waldenlibrary.org/credoreference/.

Credo is more than an online dictionary. It’s an entire library of reference materials on a single search platform that you can use to find the answers you need.

You can find hundreds of full-text journals, ebooks, dissertations and more through the many databases provided by the Walden Library.

The Walden Library has many databases that provide full-text articles, ebooks and dissertations. You can find these resources in the Credo Reference Service (CredoResource) or on their own respective websites.

The Credo Reference Service is a resource for finding reference materials related to your research questions. This database contains over 4 million items including journal articles and monographs available online at no cost to U of T students or faculty members! To access this resource all you have do is log into your Credo account then click on either “Resources” or “Reference Articles” depending on what type of material you would like access:

  • JSTOR – Full Text Articles by Citation Type

  • CrossRef – Full Text Articles by Citation Type
