Lobbying for Healthcare Change

Introduction

Healthcare is a big deal for most people, and it’s not just about getting sick or going to the doctor. It’s also about everything that comes before that how well we’re taken care of when we’re ill and how much money we spend on medical care every year. Now more than ever, Americans are demanding change in their health care system: they want to see more affordable coverage options available to everyone. At the same time, they understand that this will take time and patience but they also know there are things they can do right now! In this article we’ll explore some ways you can get involved with your local community leaders or congressional representatives about improving healthcare coverage through lobbying efforts.

You have the right to make your voice heard, especially about issues that affect you, like health care.

Lobbying for more coverage can be surprisingly easy!

If you’re not sure where to start, check out the resources below. And if you’re ready to start lobbying, call your member of Congress!

How to contact your member of Congress:

Who should I write to?

You should write to:

  • Your representative in Congress. This is the person who works on your local level and represents you in the House or Senate. It’s important to understand which of these offices they represent because they have different kinds of jurisdiction over certain issues, so it can be useful to know where your elected official stands on healthcare reform before you start lobbying them directly.

  • Your senator and/or governor. These are two separate offices that serve as leaders for their respective state legislatures, but also have a lot of influence over federal policymaking on topics such as healthcare reform (and perhaps other issues). The senators are more likely than governors to be involved in discussions about how best to improve our health care system they tend not only

to lead from within their states’ governments but also advocate for change at all levels of government through legislation introduced into Congress or signed into law by presidents themselves!

What should I write about?

It’s important to remember that you are writing with the goal of influencing people. That means they will be reading your emails, tweets, and posts—and they might not be interested in what you have to say.

In order to get them interested in hearing what you have to say, consider answering these questions:

  • What has been your personal experience with healthcare? What were some challenges or obstacles that stood in your way when trying to get access or treatment for an illness? How did those challenges affect other parts of your life (schoolwork, relationships) as well?

  • What do think will happen if this policy change goes through? Do people need more options when it comes down their family members’ medical bills? Would this type of legislation reduce costs by allowing patients who cannot afford medication without insurance coverage from getting cheaper alternatives instead just paying out-of-pocket expenses because there isn’t enough money left over after paying off other expenses such as rent/mortgage payments etcetera

How do I write a letter to Congress?

Writing a letter to Congress is a great way to influence change. You can use your own words, and it’s easier than making a phone call or sending an email. But you should be aware of some important things before submitting your letter:

  • Be polite. Remember that these people work hard for us, so they deserve our respect and attention. Your tone matters here—don’t make demands or threats in the body of your letter; instead, focus on conveying why this issue matters to you and how it affects everyone else who has lived through similar situations in their lives (or would like them).

  • Use clear language that is easy for anyone else who reads it later on down the road when things get more complicated than just one person asking another person nicely about something very specific.”

What else can I do?

  • Call your representatives and senators.

  • Join a group that advocates for health care reform, like the American Health Care Reform Act Coalition, which works to change the healthcare system by educating people on how it works and helping them understand their rights as consumers of insurance.

  • Vote in elections that affect access to quality health care services and coverage options available to you; this will show lawmakers who are working on these issues what their constituents want! If you don’t have time or energy left over after voting and calling your elected officials (or having them call you), write an op-ed piece about why this issue is important to society at large—and why we should work harder toward changing our current system into something better than what we have now.*

You can write to your representatives. You can also attend a town hall meeting and talk with them in person. Signing petitions is another great way to let people know how important your issue is, but make sure you read through all of the information they provide before signing anything many petitions are filled with false claims or misinformation that could harm those who sign them (for example: “The government has no business funding abortion”).

Conclusion

You have the right to make your voice heard, especially about issues that affect you, like health care. The best way to do this is by writing a letter or contacting an elected official in your state. You can also join a group like Moms Demand Action or Demand Progress and help write legislation on gun control and other issues. And finally, if you want to get more involved with politics in general and help elect candidates who support your interests you can volunteer for campaigns and learn how they work before actually running yourself!
