Identify your options in the job market based on your educational level.

  1. How will increasing your level of education affect how you compete in the current job market?
  2. How will increasing your level of education affect your role in the future of nursing?

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.

Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.

Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.

The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.

IOM Future of Nursing recommendations

Introduction

Nursing is a growing profession, and the IOM has recommended changes to help nurses stay competitive.

Recommendation 1

Recommendation 1: Move toward a more evidence-based practice.

The IOM recognizes that nurses have been using nursing knowledge, skills and competencies for decades without rigorous evidence to support their use. The organization recommends that healthcare professionals move away from traditional approaches that focus on individualized practices or the belief that one best way exists to provide care. Instead, they should consider evidence-based practice models such as those developed by organizations like the Cochrane Collaboration and American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). By employing these proven methods of care improvement, nurses could improve patient outcomes while reducing costs associated with unnecessary testing or treatment complications

Recommendation 2

The future of nursing requires nurses to work in a team with other professionals, such as physicians and pharmacists. In order to be successful in this new environment, nurses must change their mindset and begin to take more responsibility for their patients’ health care goals. Nurses must also be flexible in order to meet the needs of each patient while still providing quality care.

Recommendation 3

Recommendation 3: Nurses should be involved in the design of technology, implementation, and evaluation.

The importance of nurses’ involvement in these processes cannot be understated. Nurses have an intimate knowledge of patients’ needs and how they might be met through technology; they are also responsible for educating patients about new technologies. As a result, it’s essential that they take part in these important aspects of health care delivery—especially considering that many hospitals across America are slashing their budgets for technological innovation.

Recommendation 4

Recommendation 4:

Nursing schools should require all students to take at least one course in global health.

The IOM recommends that nurses be encouraged to learn about the health of their patients and communities, as well as understand the cultural, social and economic factors that affect health.

Recommendation 5

Recommendation 5: Accreditation and certification of nursing education programs should be aligned with the needs of the health care system.

The IOM recommends that accreditation and certification of nursing education programs be aligned with the needs of the health care system. In addition, they suggest that “the number, types, and duration of training experiences should vary across settings so that nurses have opportunities to learn many different aspects of practice in different roles; encourage greater coordination among colleges/universities; ensure that graduates have a strong foundation in knowledge and skills required by current standards; ensure broad access to post-graduate study; promote lifelong learning opportunities for nurses.”

Conclusion

We have reached the end of our journey. We hope you enjoyed it, and will continue to be a part of the IOM Future of Nursing movement. We look forward to seeing how your organization can take advantage of these recommendations!
