DNP 820 Health Policy and Advocacy
Module 7 Assignment
This course, you will apply the concepts learned by collaborating with or at least contacting a policy maker about an issue that you think would advance nursing scope, practice or culture or improve patient care and outcomes in a positive way.
Student should research the literature searching for how the nurse can re-conceptualize their role from seeing health policy as “something that happens†to them to “something they can shape†(Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2011, p. S-6).
In Module two, you were asked to describe an issue you hoped to improve and you created a presentation about the plan. This week, you will present on the progress you have made during the past 5 weeks. This policy change proposal could be with state Board of nursing, local boards, state representatives, or member of Congress/Senate. Based on the issues you selected in Module two, that you are passionate about, researched in depth, and contact with the appropriate policy maker (preferably in person, but at least by email or letter) details of your position and the evidence that supports it, explain your results, determination and outcomes in a 20 slide PowerPoint presentation with audio and speaker notes on all content slides. Make certain to include your sources and a reference slide.

The public is more trusting of nurses than any other profession, according to a recent survey by Gallup and Healthways. For example, when asked about their level of trust in nurses for providing safe medication administration and patient care (as compared with other professions), 78% reported having absolute confidence in them; only 19% said they had no confidence at all.
IOM recommendations
The IOM recommendations are a good starting point for exploring the future of nursing. They are not the end of the conversation, as they only represent one point of view and do not cover all aspects of professional practice. However, they can provide valuable insight into what may be possible in terms of education and workforce development.
The IOM report highlights several key areas that need to be addressed if we want to make progress towards improving health outcomes:

-
Policy makers should work towards making sure everyone has access to high quality care regardless where they live or what kind of insurance plan they have access to; this includes ensuring adequate funding so providers don’t feel pressured into taking shortcuts when providing care because they fear financial ruin due how expensive things have become over time since Medicare became law back in 1965 (i…
The future of nursing in action
Nursing is a critical part of the healthcare system. Nurses are on the front lines, providing care to patients and making sure they get the right care at the right time. They can help reduce hospital readmission rates by helping patients understand how their disease will affect their lifestyle, and they can also improve coordination between doctors and other health professionals working together in hospitals or clinics.
