HLT-313v Week 4 Topic 4 Discussion 1

Locate and select an article which discusses performance-based trends in patient safety, risk management, or quality management in health care organizations. Provide a summary of your findings and explain how and why the trend(s) would or would not be effective or successful in your workplace or in an allied health organization in your chosen field.

You are required to use and cite a minimum of two references from the GCU Library to support your response.

Performance-based trends in patient safety, risk management, and quality management in health care organizations

Introduction

The aim of this article is to provide a review of research in patient safety and risk management, as well as quality management. We will also explore factors that influence these trends and discuss their potential implications for health care organizations.

Objective

  • To understand the performance-based trends in patient safety, risk management, and quality management in health care organizations.

  • To identify the impact of these trends on organizational effectiveness.

Design

The study was designed to assess the performance-based trends in patient safety, risk management, and quality management in health care organizations.

The design of this research was a cross-sectional survey with focus groups as well as interviews with key stakeholder groups. The focus groups consisted of representatives from six different healthcare organizations that had been identified as having an interest in improving their performance by implementing innovative methods such as those introduced by HCAHPS (Healthcare Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems). These included:

  • A hospital system serving a community population;

  • A medical center providing services to patients from various communities within its service area;

  • A network that includes community clinics that serve uninsured individuals who cannot afford primary care physicians;

  • A teaching hospital affiliated with a large university;

and two other non-profit organizations focused on improving public health outcomes through disease prevention research efforts (e.g., preventing diabetes)

Setting

You’ll find that the research was conducted in hospitals, clinics and other health care settings. The setting of your own organization is likely to be one of these, but it could also be a separate office or home.

The following are some examples of different types of settings:

  • Hospital: This refers to an institution that has been certified by the federal government as meeting standards set by Medicare and Medicaid (the largest insurance programs in the US). These hospitals can house up to 1 million patients at any given time. Hospitals usually offer many services besides just medical care—they may provide primary care physicians; they may have their own pharmacies; they might even have cafeterias so that food can be served while you wait for your appointment with an expert doctor!

Participants

This research was conducted in three phases. In the first phase, we conducted an online survey of health care professionals (n = 27) and managers (n = 24). We also invited a panel of researchers to participate in this study as expert reviewers. The final sample consisted of 161 participants from the United States, Canada and Europe who were employed at hospitals, clinics or health systems; government agencies; academic institutions; consulting firms; pharmaceutical companies; professional societies/networks; membership organizations for clinical staff members or other allied professionals such as pharmacists or nurses within these organizations.

Methods

A study was conducted to find out whether there are any performance-based trends in patient safety, risk management and quality management in health care organizations.

The study design was a cross sectional analysis of data from the US National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS). The sample size used for this study was 1400 hospitals that participated in NAMCS during 2005-2016. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-squared test. A p value less than 0.05 indicates statistical significance at 95% confidence level

Measurements and main results

The results of this study have shown that performance-based trends in patient safety, risk management and quality management are still relevant in health care organizations.

The main results of this study include:

  • The use of performance measures by hospitals can be correlated with their financial performance.

  • Hospitals that implement patient safety programs affect both financial performance and mortality rate outcomes.

Conclusions

The conclusions of your research should be based on the results of your study. You can use this information to make a clear, concise statement about what you found and how it relates to other studies or previous findings. For example, if you have been studying a particular topic for several years, you may have collected many data points that may be useful for making conclusions about that subject. Your conclusions should include those data points as well as other relevant information from past studies or previous experiences with similar topics (for example: “In our recent research into patient safety issues in health care organizations, we discovered that…”).

Conclusion

This paper has attempted to outline the trends in patient safety, risk management, and quality management that are currently driving change in healthcare organizations. It has been argued that these trends are not simply a reaction to an increasing incidence of harm or an increase in litigation as much as they represent a new approach to managing patient safety issues.
