Cannabis 101 for Nurses

Write a 1000-1500 word essay addressing each of the following points. Be sure to completely answer all the questions for each bullet point. There should be two main sections, one for each bullet below. Separate each section in your paper with a clear heading that allows your professor to know which bullet you are addressing in that section of your paper. Support your ideas with at least three (3) sources using citations in your essay. Make sure to cite using the APA writing style for the essay. The cover page and reference page in correct APA do not count towards the minimum word amount. Review the rubric criteria for this assignment.

Cannabis 101 for Nurses

Introduction

Cannabis is a popular drug for many reasons. It can be used for pain relief, to treat certain mental illnesses such as insomnia and anxiety, and even to help with muscle spasms. However, cannabis is also one of the most misunderstood drugs in existence. There are many myths surrounding cannabis use that need to be debunked so that nurses can better educate patients about its benefits and risks before they make their decisions about whether or not they want to try it out themselves (or recommend it).

Cannabis 101

Cannabis is a plant that contains many different compounds, including cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are the active compounds in cannabis and can be found in both flower and oil forms. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), for example, is the most well-known cannabinoid because it causes you to feel high when you smoke or eat it.

THC has psychoactive properties that cause users to feel relaxed and euphoric—it also has painkilling effects on some parts of the body. CBD does not have these psychoactive properties; however, it does have anti-inflammatory properties that may help manage symptoms related to chronic pain or other ailments such as arthritis or MS disease progression

Basic information about cannabis.

Cannabis is a plant that has been used for thousands of years. It can be smoked, eaten, or used in a vaporizer. Cannabis is the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States (and worldwide).

It’s important to know what you’re dealing with when it comes to cannabis use because there are so many different products on the market today that can contain varying amounts of THC and CBD. If you don’t know how much CBD or THC is in your product, then it’s possible that you could end up getting high unintentionally if you share your vape pen with someone else who doesn’t know anything about cannabis or its effects on individuals who consume too much of this powerful substance every day

Chemistry of cannabis.

  • Cannabinoids: The most common cannabinoids found in cannabis are THC and CBD. These two compounds have been shown to have varying effects on the body, but they’re also responsible for some of the same effects as each other. For example, both THC and CBD can help with pain relief, appetite stimulation and nausea reduction—all things that may be useful for patients who suffer from cancer or other illnesses that cause chronic pain or nausea.

  • Terpenes: Terpenes are what give cannabis its aroma and flavor profile; they’re also responsible for many of its medicinal properties as well as helping explain why some strains smell so good (the terpenes give them their distinctive smell). Some common terpenes include limonene (found in citrus fruits), myrcene (found in hops), pinene (pine needles), eucalyptol/balsam fern/sweet basil etc…

What is CBD?

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis. CBD has been shown to have many therapeutic benefits and is not addictive like THC.

CBD can be used to treat a wide range of symptoms such as pain and anxiety. It also has been shown to help with sleep disorders by reducing inflammation in the body that causes insomnia or restlessness at night time when you’re trying to fall asleep (this can be especially helpful if you suffer from PTSD).

What are the active compounds in cannabis?

The active compounds in cannabis are a complex mixture of chemicals, many of which have not yet been identified. The most well-known compound is THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which is responsible for the psychoactive effects experienced when using cannabis. However, CBD—the non-psychoactive cannabinoid that has been shown to have therapeutic properties—is also present in large amounts and may play an important role in managing certain conditions such as anxiety or sleep disorders.

What is THC?

THC is the most well-known compound in cannabis and also a natural constituent of the plant. It’s present at varying levels throughout flowers, leaves and stalks.

THC has been used to treat nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy treatment; appetite loss associated with cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy; chronic pain; multiple sclerosis symptoms; Parkinson’s disease symptoms such as tremors or stiffness that can affect movement speed (such as walking); glaucoma (increased intraocular pressure); epilepsy; sleep disorders such as insomnia or nightmares due to PTSD from military service members returning home from warzones overseas where they witnessed traumatic events happening around them on a daily basis while serving their country,” according to Colorado Seniors Marijuana Legalization Initiative website.”

What is CBN?

Cannabidiol (CBD), also known as CBD oil and hemp oil, is a non-psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant. In fact, it’s one of over 100 compounds in the marijuana plant that have been identified as having medicinal properties.

CBD has been used for years to help relieve pain and anxiety, fight cancer cells and improve sleep quality. The best part about CBD products is that they are completely legal at this time; however there are still some rules you should be aware of before buying anything from a store near you!

What is CBG?

CBG is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. It’s also a major cannabinoid in hemp, with over 10% of the plant’s compounds being CBG.

CBG has been shown to have anti-cancer properties and may be helpful in treating cancer due to its ability to slow tumor growth by inhibiting cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis (programmed cell death).

Medicinal cannabis

Medicinal cannabis is a plant that’s been used for medicine for thousands of years. It can help with pain, nausea and anxiety, as well as sleep problems and appetite loss in cancer patients. Cannabis also has antidepressant effects—and may be useful to treat depression in people who do not respond well to conventional treatments.

First, do no harm.

First, do no harm.

Patients should be informed about the risks and benefits of medicinal cannabis and monitored for side effects. They should also be educated about the risks of using medicinal cannabis, including impaired driving and increased risk for other drug use (e.g., prescription opioids).

When patients ask about medicinal cannabis.

  • When patients ask about medicinal cannabis:

  • Ask about their symptoms and the medical history.

  • Have the patient explain how they’ve tried other medications in the past, or if there are any side effects that bother them.

  • Ask if they have any experience with medicinal cannabis before (or during) treatment with opiates.

Takeaway:

There are many different compounds in cannabis, and each one has a specific effect on the body. The most important thing is to find out what your body needs, then decide which compound will best meet those needs. If you’re unsure of how your body responds to different compounds, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before making any changes!

Conclusion

We hope this guide has been useful to you and that you have a better understanding of cannabis now. It’s important to remember that despite its many benefits, cannabis is a drug and should be used responsibly.
