IOM Future of Nursing Report and Nursing

Introduction

The future of nursing is one of the biggest topics in all of health care, and it’s not going away anytime soon. The IOM report that was released in February 2019 has been generating a lot of conversation among nurses and healthcare leaders who want to know how they can continue to grow their careers. This blog post will dig into what’s happened since the IOM report, but first let me explain why this topic is so important:

The report listed eight key findings and recommendations.

The report was released in March 2020. It was the result of a two-year study that included research from over 1,000 nurses and other health professionals, interviews with over 100 healthcare leaders and analysis of more than 2 million tweets.

The eight key findings and recommendations are:

  • Nursing is a career option for all people – not just those who want to become nurses themselves.

  • Nurses should be valued as experts on their patients’ needs instead of being seen simply as carers or technicians. They should also have autonomy over how they provide care (for example, being able to change roles within the organization). Nursing needs to become more agile so it can keep up with changing requirements in health systems around the globe – for example by using technology effectively at every point where someone interacts with an elderly patient or child through their environment (elderly home) rather than relying on outdated models only used until now which may not suit everyone’s needs anymore.”

What’s happening since the release of the IOM Report?

The release of the IOM report was a major turning point for nursing. It has had an impact on policy and education, leadership, practice and research.

Nursing education is now more focused on patient outcomes rather than simply providing care. Nurses are required to meet with patients at home visits as part of their clinical practice requirements in order to ensure patients get what they need specifically related to their health condition or illness; this is especially true if you’re working with older adults who may not be able travel far from home easily due to mobility issues or being unable climb stairs comfortably (elderly people tend to have different needs). In addition there’s also been a shift towards emphasizing teamwork between doctors/nurses/other medical professionals so that everyone works together towards achieving shared goals rather than just focusing on one person’s needs alone – this type of collaboration can improve communication across departments which ultimately leads us all closer together towards our common goal!

Leadership roles within organizations such as hospitals have changed too – CEOs are trained differently these days compared when I was growing up – instead they focus more on how best practices should be implemented within organizations rather than having specific tasks assigned directly by them before anything else happens after hours spent hours researching various sources online like LinkedIn profiles etcetera.”

Advancing education:

  • More emphasis on science-based education

  • More focus on simulation

  • More focus on interprofessional education

  • More focus on health promotion and disease prevention

  • More team-based learning

Developing leadership skills:

Leadership is not a job title. It’s a set of skills that can be learned, and it’s about how you interact with others in your workplace.

Leadership isn’t just about making decisions or communicating with others: it’s also about how you make decisions, because if your leadership style is based on fear (for example), then you may not be as effective at building trust or rapport with others. Instead, focus on engaging people by listening attentively to what they have to say and using this information to inform your perspective on their situation or problem (or whatever).

Improving diversity in nursing leadership:

The future of nursing is bright. The profession has seen a dramatic rise in the number of nurses in recent years, and this growth will continue into the next decade. However, improving diversity within nursing leadership is just as important as expanding access to care for all patients. In fact, studies show that having more diverse leaders can have a positive impact on patient outcomes and lower health care costs overall—and it’s something that needs attention now more than ever before!

The IOM report highlighted several ways in which we could improve our workforce by increasing representation from underrepresented groups: “Increased diversity among physicians leads to better health outcomes for patients,” they wrote; “diverse teams tend to innovate faster than homogeneous ones.”

Increasing opportunities for practice, research and leadership roles:

Nurses are often the front line of healthcare, and they’re in a position to see what works and what doesn’t. Nurses need more opportunities to practice, research, and lead. They also need more opportunities to lead in healthcare policy—and they can do this by helping their professional associations better represent nurses’ needs on issues like quality improvement or pay equity.

Expanding data collection

The IOM report recommends that data collection be expanded to include patients, doctors and researchers. This will allow for more holistic insights into what works in healthcare and how to improve it.

Data collection can be done by nurses, physicians or researchers who ask their patients about their experiences with a certain treatment or procedure. It could also involve asking patients about their experiences with another type of treatment or procedure from a different doctor than the one who provided it to them. With this information collected over time (and possibly shared), we will have an improved understanding of how well different treatments work together as well as which ones are most effective at treating certain conditions

The IOM Future of Nursing report has influenced many areas of nursing and given nurses more opportunities to have a voice in healthcare policy.

The IOM Future of Nursing report is a year-long study that was released in 2010. It was the result of interviews with more than 400 nurses and their families, as well as surveys, focus groups and meetings with leaders from academia, government and industry.

The report has influenced many areas of nursing including health policy, patient safety, workforce issues such as aging populations and burnout rates among nurses.

Conclusion

The IOM report is a great resource for nurses to use as we work towards improving nursing care. The recommendations will help make sure that patients receive high-quality care, and that nurses have the resources to do their jobs well.
