Communication and Information Literacy
Introduction
Communicating effectively, whether in person or online, requires trust and reciprocity.
1. What is Information Literacy?
Information literacy is the ability to find and evaluate information. It’s a skill that everyone needs, but it’s also one that you can develop over time. Information literacy is a lifelong skill, because it involves learning how to process and use information in different ways.
Information literacy is an essential part of education, and it helps people become better informed citizens who make informed decisions about their communities and careers. In addition to being critical for everyday life as well as careers (such as science or journalism), information literacy plays an important role in all professions: medicine; law enforcement; business management; public service administration; teaching at all levels (high school through college); public relations campaigns targeting consumers or citizens’ groups involved with public policies or politics—and so much more!
2. Effective Communication
-
Effective Communication
-
Understand the purpose of the communication. The first step in effective communication is to understand the purpose of your message and what you hope to achieve with it. If you wrote a report for an evaluation, then your goal is to inform others about a situation or issue so they can make informed decisions about how best to act on that information. If you’re writing an email response after being asked for feedback on something at work, then your main goal will be getting feedback from someone else so they can improve their work product (and maybe even get promoted!). In both cases, think about whether there’s anything specific that needs addressing before diving into content; otherwise it could end up sounding like everyone’s just talking about themselves!
3. Your Digital Footprint
Your digital footprint is the record of everything you do online. You can control your digital footprint, which is how people see you and what they think of you. It’s a record of your speaking, writing and researching skills that shows up in search engine results; it’s also how people find you on social media platforms such as LinkedIn or Facebook.
Your reputation matters to employers more than ever before because companies are increasingly using algorithms to determine who gets hired for a job based on their past performance rather than personal interviews with potential employees (which may have been used previously). Employers want applicants who have good reputations because they know these candidates will be productive employees who won’t cause any trouble at work—and employers don’t want troublemakers around anyway!
4. The Risks of Social Media and Gaming
Social media and gaming are both sources of distraction. In fact, it’s estimated that around 60% of people in the United States play games on their smartphone or tablet at least once per day. Social media can also be a source of stress for many people because it gives them access to information about other people’s lives which they may not know how to handle properly. This could lead to cyberbullying as well as depression because you don’t want your friends knowing what you’re going through so they’ll try and help but aren’t equipped with the right tools needed throughout this process (like someone who has experienced similar experiences).
5. Cyberbullying
Cyberbullying is a serious problem that can be defined as the use of digital technologies to deliberately and repeatedly harm others. Cyberbullies are often associated with social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Cyberbullying can include:
-
Texting – sending messages or photos anonymously to another person on their phone without their consent
-
Emailing – sending an email or instant message with malicious intent
-
Posting on social media – posting information about someone online in order to hurt them physically or mentally (e.g., posting pictures from private events)
Communicating effectively, whether in person or online, requires trust and reciprocity.
In order to communicate effectively, you must first be able to build trust and reciprocity. This means that your audience will listen when they believe you’re speaking from a place of truth and authenticity.
The best way for us all to communicate is in person—but that doesn’t mean we always have time for it! Communication via phone or email can be an effective way of reaching out if there are scheduling conflicts or other obstacles preventing face-to-face contact.
Conclusion
We hope you enjoyed this quick introduction to the concepts of communication and information literacy. As a reminder, if you need any help getting your message across, we’re happy to provide resources for teaching these concepts at our upcoming workshops in April and May.
