Indirect Clinical Practice Experience
Introduction
Indirect clinical practice is a type of learning experience that occurs after the student has left the clinical setting. Indirect learning can take place in any of several different ways, such as conferences or seminars.
Practice activities away from the patient to enhance the learning or to reinforce the skills learned while in direct clinical setting.
Indirect practice is learning that occurs after the student has left the clinical setting. Examples of indirect learning include conferences, seminars and clinical rounds. However, it should be noted that indirect learning cannot replace direct patient care.
Indirect practice occurs after the student has left the clinical setting
Indirect clinical practice occurs after the student has left the clinical setting. This can be done at home, or with other students. Indirect learning is often done in groups, and may be facilitated by faculty members.
Examples of indirect learning are conferences, seminars, clinical rounds, and non-clinical simulations.
-
Clinical Rounds: A clinical round is a simulation in which the attending physician observes, participates in and/or mentors residents. The goal of this activity is to simulate real-life clinical situations that occur during medical school rotations.
-
Conferences: A conference is an educational event organized by a specialty society or professional association for its members, who are expected to attend it at their own expense. Participation in conferences may also be offered free of charge if funded by an outside source; however, these events tend to be held at far greater expense than those covered by insurance payments (e.g., travel expenses).
-
Seminar Series: Seminars are usually conducted by several speakers who address one topic per session over several days or weeks; they typically last no more than 2 hours each day because they are designed primarily as education rather than therapy sessions where patients will receive individualized care after attending multiple lectures/seminars throughout the weeklong event period which usually takes place at least once every three months (if not more often).
Indirect learning may enhance a learners knowledge and skills but cannot replace direct patient care.
Indirect clinical practice experience is not the same as direct patient care.
Indirect learning may enhance a learner’s knowledge and skills but cannot replace direct patient care.
Conclusion
Indirect learning is a valuable way to enhance your knowledge and practice skills. However, it cannot replace direct patient care. Indirect learning should complement the patient care provided by your direct clinical experience and not be used as a replacement for it.
